Tis the Season!  Believe it or not, in the world of pet sitting, the holidays are here and we are darn busy!  Most pet sitters are already completely booked for the holidays. It's not uncommon for people to book their Holiday pet care a year in advance since we are open 365 days - a - year!.

If you need pet sitting this month or next, and haven't scheduled your reservation yet, notify the TOP TAILS office asap by either calling or logging into our online scheduling system and entering your dates and time frames right away!

~ We are closing our December reservations on

If you're looking to utilize our services for the first time, we will schedule an initial consultation meeting at your home.  This is so you can get to know us and our services and we can meet you and your pet family.  It is important that your pets like us too!

We'll review your online completed information form with you to help us understand your pet's needs.  We'll also get pertinent information such as vet info, emergency phone numbers and how you'd like things done.  Please remember to have 2 sets of keys made beforehand for us to keep on file for future pet care appointments.

Each day while you are away we will visit your home to walk, feed and play with your pet(s) where they will remain in their familiar and safe environment. Your pet will follow their regular diet and exercise routine and medical treatments if necessary.

We are extremely reliable and trustworthy. We will always treat your pets with love, respect and quality care. Our goal is to see that they remain happy and stress free!

"The Philly Dog" Holiday Gift Guide for Dog Lovers

The Philly Dog Holiday Gift Guide
Rescuing Animals & Changing Attitudes

rescuing animals
When we hear about yet another case of animal cruelty-puppy mills, dog fighting rings, neglected and emaciated dogs-it's easy to despair about the way many people still view dogs as disposable goods. Too many do, indisputably, and shame on them. But it's worth remembering how profoundly attitudes toward animals in general, and dogs in particular, have changed in just the last hundred years. Partly, this shift can be attributed to urbanization and the industrialization of agriculture, but a large part of the credit falls to animal rescue organizations and their tireless work to defend the rights and welfare of animals. In North America, the US led the initial charge.

In the 1870s, for example, dogcatchers in Manhattan rounded up as many as 300 strays a day, threw them in cages, and then dumped them in the East River. Dog fighting, though illegal in most states by this time, thrived because enforcement of the laws against it was largely nonexistent. (Rare through most of the 20th century, dog fighting has resurged in the last 25 years alongside increased gang activity.) And in the first decades of its existence, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh, fought an uphill battle against public indifference to animal suffering. But over the next 100 years, through relentless lobbying, essay writing, and public speaking, animal welfare advocates managed to affect profound changes. Laws were passed in favor of animal welfare, funding allocated for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, and animal shelters created for re-homing of stray and abandoned pets.

Nowadays, public opinion is overwhelmingly against animal cruelty and exploitation. We largely agree animals are sentient beings and acknowledge our responsibility to care for and respect them. Dogs? They have become actual family members. Yes, we still have far to go, but consider that the World Society for the Protection of Animals is lobbying the United Nations to adopt a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare, meant to promote international standards for the treatment of animals in farms, science labs, nature, and people's homes. Fifty years ago, that would have been unthinkable.

Keeping Cats Off Christmas Trees

 Cat and Christmas tree

The only fool proof way to keep your cat away from your Christmas tree  is to put the tree in a room the cat can't access. Unfortunately, this is often not practical. So the next best solution is to make the tree as safe as possible.

  • Ensure the tree has a good solid base so it won't easily be knocked over by your cat. Try not to have the tree near furniture & or shelves which the cats could use to jump onto the tree.
  • Keep valuable & breakable objects closer to the top of the tree where they can't easily be reached by your cat.
  • Properly secure breakable objects with wire hangers or twist ties.
  • Place a 'Scat Mat' under the tree, to deter your cat.
  • Secure your tree by attaching some clear fishing wire to the top of the tree & attaching to a ceiling hook.
  • Try placing some orange or lemon peel around the base of the tree. Cats dislike the smell of citrus. Replace the peel often.
  • Peppermint is another scent that cats dislike. Try spraying some peppermint oil around the tree.
  • If your cat is prone to nibbling on the branches, spray some bitter apple on.
  • Place some plastic carpet runner, turned upside down on the floor around the tree. Cats dislike the feel of this on their feet.
  • When there is nobody around, unplug Christmas lights, you may want to try applying a cat repellent  such as bitter apple to the lights to deter your cat from chewing the wires, obviously if this was to happen it could cause a fatal electric shock.
  • Avoid using tinsel, this can easily be swallowed & can cause choking & cause damage to the intestines.
  • Real Christmas trees are more dangerous to cats than fake plastic ones. Pine needles can puncture internal organs if eaten, they are also toxic to cats. If you do have a real tree, make sure the drink stand has plenty of water to prevent the tree drying out & losing needles. It is important that your cat isn't able to get to this water & drink it as it could result in poisoning. Vacuum needles daily!
