Going Green!
How Pet Owners Can Help

Spring is finally here and what better time to think about what you and your pets can do to help the environment.

You may be wondering what impact your animal companions can have on the environment. They don't seem to use a lot of resources and you're already obeying the scoop laws.

To get you started, we've put together a few earth friendly tips for you and your fur friends:

  • If you have a dog, use the green, bio-degradable poop bags. Plastic in general takes about 1,000 years to disintegrate. In comparison, the green, bio-degradable bags disintegrate in about 45 days. What an impact this makes with even one dog who uses 2-4 bags a day!
  • For cat owners, try using a bio-degradable liner for the litter box or consider scooping into bio-degradable dog poop bags for disposal.
  • Choose pet food without chemical preservatives. Try to avoid food containing BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin. Vary cat diets to limit their exposure to mercury in seafood. When choosing chicken, look for organic or free-range instead of "by-products."
  • Choose lawn care products without insecticides. When your pets eat grass, walk on treated lawns, breathe in the fumes, and lick their fur and feet, they may ingest dangerous chemicals which can cause nervous system damage.
  • Use kitty litter made from plant sources. Clay-based litter is strip-mined, causing extreme environmental damage during extraction. Instead choose litter made from wheat or recycled newspaper.
  • Stop using flea collars. They are not effective and expose your pets and family to continuous toxic exposure. Instead, bathe your pet regularly, vacuum often and ask your local, healthy pet store for alternatives.
Over 65% of the population in the United States are pet owners. We can make a big impact on the environment by choosing a few of the ideas above to go green with our pets! One pet can make a difference - how about yours?

If you have questions about going green with your pets, just ask your pet sitter! We walk a lot of dogs! And as a result, use plenty of scoop bags. We pride ourselves in being earth friendly and can help you get started in this important effort.
Stuffed Toy Carcasses
Trash or Treasure
 Stuffed Squirrel Toy

We all have our favorite things, a comfortable blanket or pillow,  a treasured stuffed animal or pair of slippers. When they get worn out we tend to replace them with something new. But what about the mangled stuffed toy carcasses that belong to your dog? Does your dog think of her toys as being worn out or as a treasure and old friend?

My dog has a favorite pastime of vigorously shredding the stuffing out of her toys. She's particularly fond of the stuffed squirrels with fluffy tails and she makes short work of them in about 20 minutes. Once I've cleaned up the batting from the furniture, carpet and the remains that are floating through the air, I start to reach for the toy carcass that lies ravaged and wet after the attack. It's torn up like my old pair of slippers that I left out the other day.

But then I notice the other toy carcasses in her bed, a whole collection of them. They are worn out, well-loved and the place of nap-time dreams for my little dog. And so during my spring cleaning, I toss the newly shredded toy into her bed, where it joins the other treasures of my animal companion.

Our dogs like the smell and feel of familiar surroundings - just like we do. Those old toys which have seen better days (like a few minutes ago when they still had their stuffing) will be missed and looked for high and low, if you throw them away.

Whenever I get home from the grocery store, my dog looks in every bag to see if I've brought her a new toy - she loves new toys! But she always goes back to her favorite things, the toy carcasses among them. It's where she calls home and so do I.
About TOP DOG Pet Sitting & Dog Walking

Tanya and SydneyIf you're anything like me, your pets have become family members. When you can't be home for them, you want them taken care of with the same love and attention you give them. That's exactly why I started TOP DOG Pet Sitting & Dog Walking Company, because I am a lifelong animal lover, have pets of my own (see Angel and Sydney in pics) and understand how important it is to have professional pet sitters caring for your animal companions when you're away from home.

Tanya and AngelSince early 2005, our business has been based on the belief that the clients' (parents and pets) needs are of the utmost importance. Our entire team is committed to meeting those needs.
