Fear of the Dark
They say there's nothing in
the dark that isn't there in the light. The problem is how do you know
if it's moved? When I was a child I thought there were monsters lurking
in the dark outside my bedroom door. I always slept with a night light.
King Arthur slept with a knight light. Even Chuck Norris sleeps with a
night light. Not because he's afraid of the dark, but because the dark
is afraid of him. Back to the monsters: in retrospect, I imagine they
were never really there. And if they were, they had to be pretty wimpy
to be held at bay by a night light (though it was a Batman night
light). I suppose its human nature to be afraid of the dark, the
unknown, the abyss. Maybe that's why we identify with the guy who
dropped the quarter and looked for it two blocks away under the
streetlight ("because the light's better here"). But if we always
search in the well-lighted places, we never find the real treasures.
Perhaps Thomas Merton said it best: "What can we gain by sailing to the
moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from
ourselves? This is the most important of all voyages of discovery, and
without it, all the rest are not only useless, but disastrous." Or
Franklin D. Roosevelt: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself...and
Chuck Norris."
