Hildegard Reminds us of The Call to Stand Up to Corruption
|
Hildegard of Bingen was brave and outspoken in her day and challenges us to match her courage and depth in ours.
This program will seek to put us in touch with her animating and reforming power as she urges us to ""wake up," "be creative" and "be useful." We will explore her deep teachings about the Divine Feminine as well as the call to stand up to corruption and patriarchal excess wherever it is found. The presentation will draw upon Dr. Fox's New book Hildegard of Bingen, A Saint for Our Times - Unleashing Her Power in the 21st Century. In the pages of this book, Hildegard's teachings - and warnings - live again. By pointing out the injustices of her time, we recognize them as the same injustices of our time - only magnified. She warns us of the consequences of the mistreatment and marginalizing of women, oppression of the poor and powerless, destruction of our environment, and the dangers of a patriarchal system run wild. Demanding reform of society's institutions and social structures, Hildegard implores all of us to live in integrity with our espoused principles. She especially implores our leaders to wield their influence "wisely." Hildegard also tells us how to bring light to the dark places in our lives, and thus our world. She urges us to "be useful," to nurture nature, to speak up against injustice wherever we find it. But she also reminds us to sing, to dance, to be creative, and to celebrate life. Tickets are on sale now. Dr. Matthew Fox has been called by some a heretic, by others a prophet.
One thing for certain - he is never boring.
Matthew Fox: Matthew Fox is the popular and controversial theologian and author of 30 books, translated into 48 languages, that recover the mystical tradition of Christianity. His Original Blessing was a landmark in understanding this tradition. Fox's books (including The Reinvention of Work, The Coming of the Cosmic Christ, One River, Many Wells and The Pope's War) also emphasize social, ecological, and gender justice. He is founder and director of the Institute of Culture and Creation Spirituality in Oakland, CA. A member of the Dominican Order for 34 years, Fox was silenced by the Vatican in 1989 and formally dismissed in 1993. Now an Episcopal minister, he travels extensively, sharing his radical vision of a Christianity that leans toward mysticism rather than orthodoxy, Divine Feminism rather than patriarchy. About Hildegard of Bingen and Matthew's New Book
|
Matthew Fox's New Book Honors Canonization of Medieval Feminine Mystic and Environmentalist Hildegard of Bingen
To mark the canonization of a 12th century German Benedictine nun, Hildegard of Bingen, by Pope Benedict XVI in October, Namaste Publishing has release this new book by internationally acclaimed author and teacher Rev. Matthew Fox-- formerly a member of the Roman Catholic Dominican order and today an Episcopalian priest-- the book will examine what we can learn from this outstanding woman from the Middle Ages.In an era when women were marginalized, Hildegard was an outspoken, controversial figure. Yet so visionary was her insight that she was sought out by kings, popes, abbots, and bishops for advice. A sixteenth century follower of Martin Luther called her "the first Protestant" because of her appeals to reform the church. For many centuries after her death Hildegard was ignored or even ridiculed and is only today being recognized for her immense contribution to our understanding of our spiritual relationship to the earth-a contribution that touches on key issues faced by our planet in the 21st century, particularly with regard to the environment and ecology.
As a writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, Benedictine abbess, healer, artist, and student of science, Hildegard was a pioneer in many fields in her day. Although she is commonly referred to as Saint Hildegard, she has never been officially canonized. Hildegard's canonization will include the conferring on her in October of the highest honor the Catholic Church can bestow, as she is made a Doctor of the Church-only the fourth woman in history to be honored in this way, joining Catherine of Siena, St Teresa of Avila, and St Therese of Lisieux. Matthew Fox, a founder of the movement known as Creation Spirituality, has previously authored numerous books on how spirituality needs to grow out of our rootedness in nature, as well as on a deep ecumenism that embraces spiritual traditions from around the world such as Buddhism, Judaism, Sufism, and Native American teachings. A controversial figure himself, Fox is the ideal person to write on Hildegard, having already authored two books about her and having taught her work for over thirty years. He has been credited with first bringing her work to the attention of the world today and figured prominently in a four-hour DVD produced by the BBC that includes her opera and her paintings or "illuminations," with Fox commenting on them. Like Hildegard, Fox has also found himself in conflict with Catholic authorities who silenced him for a year before expelling him from his Order. His first book, Original Blessing, directly contravened the Catholic teaching of Original Sin. Paradoxically, Benedict XVI has said of Hildegard, "She also explored the vital relationship between God and creation..."
