Sunday, November 13, 11 am Mark Steiner presents The Power of "No, Thank You" in a World of Super-Normal Stimuli Clifton Unitarian Church 2231 Payne Street
Recent strides in understanding our brains and how their evolution impacts our mental processes are changing our understanding of what is often described as obsessive or addictive behaviors.
This includes instincts to acquire always "a little more" of substances that used to be hard for us to find such as salts, sugars, fats, and caffeine. Now not only are these substances readily available but they are present in such refined forms that they can be considered "super-normal stimuli".
This talk examines this phenomena and offers new understandings of what can be called miss-matched instincts. |

He is a native of eastern Kentucky and has been employed by the federal Office of Surface Mining (or OSM) since the implementation of the federal Surface Mining law in 1978. Dr. Angel has the distinction of having issued the first federal closure order under the federal surface mining law and for 28 years he supervised the inspection and enforcement operations for OSM in eastern Kentucky.

Monday, November 21, 6:00 pm Social Change Book Club Everything Is Obvious: *Once You Know the Answer by Duncan Watts Heine Bros. Coffee 119 Chenoweth Lane, St Matthews. In our November book, Everything Is Obvious: *Once You Know the Answer, Duncan Watts shows how common sense reasoning and history conspire to mislead us into believing that we understand more about human behavior than we do. And why attempts to predict, manage, or manipulate social and economic systems so often go wrong. The Social Change Book Club is open to everyone who is interested in understanding, participating, leading, or supporting social change. Each month we select a book and get together to discuss. Selections rotate among three themes: social changes, how we work with others to make change happen, and the inner qualities needed to bring change into the world. Please just show up if you are interested--no RSVP, commitment, etc. It is great when people have read the book, but that is not a requirement to come and discuss. We got this going because there is a lot to learn about how to make social change happen and people who are interested in changing the world need opportunities to share stories and experience community with others who care.
