Airbus to establish $600 million assembly plant in Mobile

 Image

Airbus, a subsidiary of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co., announced its plans July 2nd to build a $600 million aircraft assembly plant at the Brookley Aeroplex in Mobile.

The plant at Brookley will assemble the industry leading family of A319, A320 and A321 aircraft. The facility will employ 1,000 full-time workers at full capacity.

Construction of the assembly line will begin in the summer of 2013 and create an estimated 2,500 jobs over a two-year period to build the plant. Aircraft assembly is planned to start in 2015, with first deliveries from the Mobile facility beginning in 2016. Airbus anticipates the facility will produce between 40 and 50 aircraft per year by 2018.

According to the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, the project has two phases - a final assembly line where aircraft parts from around the world will be delivered to the Brookley Aeroplex site for assembly, and a delivery center - similar to a showroom - where assembled planes will be delivered to its new owners.

According to Troy Wayman, vice president of economic development for the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, in order to meet the company's aggressive plan, there are a number of suppliers who will need to locate within close proximity to the facility.

Jim Searcy, Executive Director of Coastal Gateway Regional Economic Development Alliance (CGEDA), observed that this is a remarkable day for the City of Mobile, the Coastal Gateway Region, and the State of Alabama.  "The supplier network for the Airbus facility will be extensive and the 5 counties that comprise the Coastal Gateway Region are well positioned to compete for these projects.  This is a transformative project for our region and the success of this project will validate southwest Alabama as a location for the aerospace industry."

Airbus stressed that the assembly line, which will create jobs and strengthen the aerospace industry, is part of its strategy to enhance Airbus' global competitiveness by meeting the growing needs of its customers in the United States and elsewhere.

"The time is right for Airbus to expand in America," said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President & CEO, at the announcement today in Mobile. "The U.S. is the largest single-aisle aircraft market in the world - with a projected need for 4,600 aircraft over the next 20 years - and this assembly line brings us closer to our customers. Mobile is now becoming part of Airbus' global production network, joining our successful and growing assembly lines in Hamburg, Toulouse and Tianjin.

"When Airbus aircraft take to the skies, our pride and workmanship will soar along with them," Alabama Governor Robert Bentley said.  "We owe thanks to so many people who helped make this effort a success.  This project will create 1,000 stable, well-paying jobs that the people of this area need and deserve.  Alabama has the best workforce you'll find anywhere in the U.S.  Airbus has recognized all that this state can offer expanding industries, and the company is making a significant new investment in Alabama.  Airbus and its parent company, EADS, have been great citizens of Alabama for years now, and we are excited to build on our wonderful relationship."

Airbus already has a strong and growing presence in Alabama and throughout the United States.  In Alabama, the company operates an Engineering Center in Mobile - also located at Brookley Aeroplex and employing more than 200 engineers and support staff - as well as an Airbus Military customer services operation supporting U.S. Coast Guard aircraft.

CGEDA establishes plan for recruiting Airbus suppliers

With the Airbus decision to locate a production facility in Mobile there will be opportunities for communities in the CGEDA region to successfully recruit and locate 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tier suppliers. Elements of our economic development strategy are outlined as follows.

Continue to work with state allies: The Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, Alabama Power Company, PowerSouth, South Alabama Gas, etc., to position CGEDA sites and buildings as logical locations for Airbus Suppliers.

Continue to recertify sites, objectively identified as aerospace "ready". Additionally, work with local economic developers and community leaders to identify new sites and facilities as suitable for supplier needs.

Coordinate our marketing efforts with those of the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance and the Mobile Chamber to leverage our resources.

Continue our efforts to improve our workforce and ensure that we have employees with the applicable skills for the aerospace industry specifically and advanced manufacturing in general.

Identify specific and strategic marketing events that will position the assets of CGEDA and allow us to leverage our resources effectively.

Integrate an aerospace strategy into the CGEDA Existing Business Program to identify any current or future synergies.

Existing Industry is the backbone of the region

Existing industry is the backbone of the Coastal Gateway region, providing most of its new jobs and capital investments.

According to Jim Searcy, Executive Director of the Coastal Gateway Regional Economic Development Alliance (CGEDA),
76 percent of capital investment and new jobs come from existing industry.

Despite those kinds of numbers being posted by existing industries, more public attention is typically focused on new industry and the figures they can generate.

This is one reason why CGEDA established its existing industry program exactly one year ago.

CGEDA kicked off their new existing business program in July 2011. Since that time, CGEDA has held an existing business training session and conducted numerous visits with existing companies located in the 5-county region. Also, an Existing Industry Appreciation Luncheon is in the works for October. More information will be sent out on this soon!

The existing industry program is designed to assist local companies with expansion plans and other issues affecting the manufacturing and industrial community in the Coastal Gateway area. The program also has the ability to identify local sourcing opportunities for companies and potential customers within the region.

The program is implemented by CGEDA staff along with volunteers, which include local economic developers from the region. The program utilizes a comprehensive interview and data driven process by means of the Synchronist format.

Synchronist is a software tool and interview system that communities across the country use to gather intelligence about their existing companies.

The Synchronist format is recommended by the Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA) as well as numerous local, regional, and statewide economic development organizations. The program addresses two objectives: 1. Gathering useful information at a volume that can provide meaningful analysis for the entire region and 2. Strengthening relationships with companies throughout the region with an emphasis on identifying potential opportunities to retain and grow jobs.

Existing business visits will be coordinated through local economic development offices and CGEDA. Volunteers will meet with companies along with the local economic developer and a Coastal Gateway representative when possible. Company information gathered during interviews will be held in the strictest confidence.

Evergreen works to recruit Korean industry

In early 2012, the City of Evergreen decided to take an aggressive stance towards recruitment of Korean auto industry.

Through the economic development office, fourteen potential tier 2 clients were identified who had similar business supply models to the existing tier 1 and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) assembly needs.

Over a period of three months, correspondence took place between the City of Evergreen and those fourteen clients. By late May 2012, the fourteen original target clients were trimmed down to six clients who showed the most promise in actually locating a factory in Evergreen.

On May 26, Bobby Skipper, the Director of Economic Development, travelled to Korea to meet the clients face to face.During the trip, two suppliers signed letters of intent and two other suppliers also scheduled visits to Evergreen.

Skipper said, "In my visit to Korea, I was astonished at the integrity of the Korean culture. Here, we seem to take for granted the tremendous opportunity all of us have to do well in life. The Koreans seem to really push themselves on all levels of life, especially when it comes to work. The corporate atmosphere in Korea is abundant."

On June 2, Skipper returned to Alabama and began finalizing negotiations with the two advanced clients who had signed letters of intent. In early August, the City of Evergreen reached a final project agreement with one supplier and purchased additional property to place the new 100,000 square foot production facility.

Planned for mid August, the City of Evergreen will formally announce the location of a new heavy press stamping manufacturer in its Industrial Park. Additionally, the Chairman and family of a Korean auto supplier will visit Evergreen for one week and spend time engaging builders and developers.

Scheduled for late August, a second Korean manufacturer (cold fusion facility) will finalize its agreements with the City of Evergreen. The facility will also be located in the Evergreen Industrial Park.

"It was very important that in my visit to Korea, that real business be done and some legitimate agreements be reached. I had no intentions of sightseeing and getting my picture made. I wanted to come back with a factory," said Skipper.

AC Fabricated awarded $6 million contract

Jerry Reeves of AC Fabricated Products addressed the Jackson City Council during its July 24th meeting, informing them the company had been awarded a $6 million contract to produce lightweight maintenance enclosures (LME) for the United States Military.

Reeves said the contract would secure the jobs of those employed by the company who were slated for possible layoffs in the near future, stabilizing its workforce. He added that if several other contracts currently being bid on by the company were awarded to AC Fabricated, it could mean additional jobs at the facility located approximately eight miles from Jackson.

According to Reeves, LMEs are some of the largest tents produced for use by the military and are used for maintenance of military vehicles. They are 32 ft. by 42 ft. and tall enough to house many of the vehicles used by soldiers for repair.

Reeves explained that the tents weigh approximately 1,400 lbs., adding that AC Fabricated will also contract out for supplying the shipping crates and electrical supply boxes for the tents. Liberty Building Supply Company, which recently relocated from Grove Hill to Jackson, will supply the crates and negotiations are being conducted with another Jackson company, Technical Engineering and Construction Services Inc. (TEC), to produce the electrical boxes.

"Subcontracting with local companies such as Liberty and TEC will save tremendously on shipping costs," added Reeves.

He went on to thank Mayor Richard Long and the city council for their support.

"Mayor Long always contacts me concerning any contracts we have bid on before he makes a trip to Washington, D.C.," he said. "He and the city assists us in any way they can in securing contracts."
