Numbers Mean Dollars - Census Summit - March 16th

March 15, 2010

Dear Coastal Gateway Friends:

The 2010 Census is about to be underway.

Historically, our region has had some of the lowest return rates in Alabama. What does that mean for your town or community? Less money in the coffers.

The Census returns directly impact your total dollars received from federal and state resources. These numbers play a vital role in your funding opportunities and overall economic wellness.

Did you know...

·         Census figures do a lot more than just provide an accurate population count?

·         They are also used to help determine federal and state funding levels, plan government services and draw legislative districts?

Please join the Division of Outreach Services Regional Center at the Livingston Community Center on March 16th at10 a.m. to hear Census Expert Dr. Darryl Lee explain what the Census means to your municipality, the impact of low return rates, and what can be done to assist you in garnering all the federal and state dollars your entity should receive for the betterment of all citizens. In addition, a representative from the Alabama Department of Community and Economic Affairs will be on-hand to discuss the effect of your area's turnout on grants and allocations from the state of Alabama.

Because we believe this information is of extreme importance, please pass this invitation along to your city council members, key community leaders, ministers, Chamber of Commerce professionals and others who can assist you in having the greatest, most accurate Census count in 2010. The census is very crucial for our region regarding obtaining federal dollars for schools, highways and other projects in our communities.

To illustrate the low rate of return during the 2000 Census count, below is a final response rate chart with just a few of our cities and counties. Please review your area's rate prior to your attendance.

Lunch will be served. Please RSVP to Tynell Fields Mitchell at (205) 652-3665 or tfields@uwa.edu IMMEDIATELY to reserve a spot at this important session. Seats are filling up fast!

This event is brought to you by the Division of Outreach Services Regional Center for Community and Economic Development (RCCED) at the University of West Alabama and the Black Belt Mayors' Council.
