Jeremy Draws a Monster Written and Illustrated by Peter McCarty

Peter McCarty's newest book, Jeremy Draws a Monster, is an imaginative read in the vein of Crockett Johnson's Harold and the Purple Crayon. Jeremy loves to draw, but he is very lonely, so he creates a monster to play with. But the monster demands things to eat constantly and Jeremy begins to run out of ways to appease the monster. What will Jeremy do about his monster problem? Straying from his previous 'soft' approach to his illustrations (Hondo and Fabian, T is for Terrible), Jeremy Draws a Monster consists of edgy pen and ink drawings that convey the spontaneity of the moment within each page. This is a fun read for all ages! Ages 3+, $16.99 |
Egg Drop Written and Illustrated by
Mini Grey
This month I couldn't decide between two picture books because I loved them both so much - so I reviewed both. Plus, who doesn't love all things Mini Grey? Egg Drop is Mini's newest book about an egg who dreams of flying. Egg sees all the birds, kites, and helicopters flying way up high. So Egg devises a plan to try and fly, using any means necessary. The other chickens try to warn Egg; tell Egg to wait. Will Egg ever make his dreams come true and learn to fly? Mini Grey's unique use of mixed media and clever sense of humor appeals to anyone who has ever dreamed big.

Although Anne Frank's story may seem to be a familiar one, this new
compilation of photographs and documents from The Anne Frank House is
an essential addition to the literature about her. This beautifully
produced volume contains never-before published school photos and
snapshots of Anne and her family, as well as reproductions of pages
from her diary, and color photographs of the rooms in the Secret Annex. These moving and heartbreaking images will deepen the experience of
anyone reading Anne's Diary for the first or the fortieth time.

Mouse and Mole Fine Feathered Friends Written and Illustrated by Wong Herbert Yee
Our favorite mismatched friends, Mouse and Mole, are back together in a
new adventure perfect for early readers. When Mouse and Mole decide to
go bird watching in order to get material for writing their own books
about birds, they discover that getting close enough to observe the
birds isn't quite as easy as they expected. With a little ingenuity,
they overcome that problem, discovering in the process that it's more
fun to use teamwork to create their book than it is to work alone.
Wong Herbert Yee's charming watercolors bring the two friends to life
in this welcome addition to the series.
Ages 5+, $15.00

When You Reach Me Written by Rebecca Stead
Set in New York City in 1979, this unique and highly intelligent novel
is a delight from start to finish. 12-year-old Miranda starts
receiving strange messages from someone who appears to know what will
happen in the future, and the messages seem to indicate that she can
prevent a tragedy if she can just figure out the clues the mysterious
sender is providing. With its nod to Madeleine Engle's A Wrinkle in
Time, and its exploration of the space/time continuum, this novel
demands much from the reader, but the rewards are breathtaking. When
all the pieces start falling into place, the reaction is "Wow--let me
go back to the beginning and read the whole book again!"
Ages 9+, $15.99

Shiver Written by Maggie Stiefvater
Maggie Stiefvater's first novel, Shiver, tells the story of a forbidden romance between a werewolf, Sam, and a human, Grace. Grace has always watched the wolves in the woods behind her house, constantly fascinated by them, especially her wolf -the one with the yellow eyes. Sam has always looked out for Grace, ensuring her safety, preventing another traumatic run in with the wolves. Told in the alternating voices of these two star-crossed lovers, Shiver is an engrossing read you won't be able to put down.
