Julia ArmstrongWelcome to my June Newsletter.

It's midsummer already and the days are starting to shorten again! It is so vital that we live in the present moment - as a nation obsessed by the weather and longing for glimpses of sun and warmth, maybe we would be better off appreciating the variety and change that is British weather! The only certain thing we know is that things change.

Everything changes all the time, it is a universal law, and so for our own wellbeing and health we would be wise to learn to 'be' with whatever is and adapt to whatever is happening now - from this position there is more likelihood that we will effect lasting positive change. By wishing things were as they were before or like some imagined future, we miss the opportunity to create changes through being present - building a new vision and reality in the dialogue and pictures we create in connection with others and within our own minds.

Like anything, our own lives cannot skip stages - there are natural and universal laws which we cannot go against and if we do there are consequences. There are no short cuts and yet we live in a society that often seems to want everything fast, seeming to forget that it is in the step and in the moment and in being present that we get the most joy and the most complete experience.

My running, as always, is a metaphor for the journey. It is impossible to rush the process of getting fit to compete in long distance running, and not only can you not rush the process, as it is a daily commitment to yourself and to remembering what your goal is, but you cannot rush the training run either - each step has to be completed before you take the next!

This month we welcome back our contributors, all of whom run or write or do both! And so all of them exist in a paradigm of needing to face the blank page on a daily basis - the writing to be written and the training to be completed.  All seeking to find freedom of expression within the discipline.

My manifestation workshops are about creating a space for this - to see where you might be holding yourself back from your dreams and goals and seeing what you need to do to stretch to achieve your dreams and setting this process in motion. If you're in Eastbourne on the first Friday morning of the month, come along - details are here.

My podcast interviews seek to uncover each person's process behind creating the life they are living, and in what way this might make a difference to others. It is through sharing and connecting with one another that we are often inspired to be more than we were before.

Wishing you a wonderful month,

Julia

Here's an update from this month...Julia running form London to Brighton

June 20th: The miles are paying off - my pace is quicker when I run intervals. I am always interested how when I do volume I get faster, with not much actual 'speed work' - I found in the past that that too much speed work seemed to have an adverse effect on my body. I would train all winter long with miles and miles and short recovery speed work - and then come the summer I frequently ran very fast times early season. I would then do more anaerobic work with the promise of even faster times beckoning - and would mysteriously get slower, the effect of the extra hard training having the effect of pouring weed killer on my budding mitochondria that I had helped blossom throughout the winter months.

It took me some years to really take notice of this pattern and start to work out the training that really worked for me. Books and training manuals advised certain ways of approaching things that didn't work for me - so I had to take from that advice what worked for me and disregard the rest. And this is how we must take responsibility for ourselves in all aspects of our life. Take note of the effect of what we do and think and how we act. What effect does the food we eat and drink have on us - how much sleep do we really need? What works for us - what doesn't? If we are able to know and look after ourselves we will be in a far better position to help others find a way to look after themselves.

This is why the body and training are such a swift and transparent learning ground. The effect of what we do shows up in the body and we cannot hide from this - we can however keep going in denial as I did, preferring for a few years to keep trying to do what I was told rather than listen to my own body and my own wisdom.
Each of us is unique, with individual set of needs and requirements - we are a study of one and the expert on ourselves.

The Bare Truth

We exist forever in dialogue, we create our future and give meaning to our past in the dialogues we engage in. The spaces between us are where we weave the magic and make up the stories that exist in the moment - but shape our future. Within the dialogue we write and rewrite our history.

In the telling and retelling of our stories we have the chance to find peace and the freedom from any regret or unresolved wounds, from the pain which often holds us in the past, locked within a tale, as well as the joy that comes through sharing memories that form the fabric of our relationships and make our history rich with meaning.

Through telling our story, through being heard and hearing ourselves, we can often see our stories from multiple perspectives. This makes it possible to move ourselves to the present - and towards a future created with intention and consciousness rather than unconscious patterns and outdated scripts!
