A Great Valentine's Gift
Written by Marilyn Morris, President of Aim For Success
We tend to think of Valentine's Day as that time of the year when we express our love to that special person in our life. A young man recently shared the following story with me. He said:
On Valentine's Day, the year I turned 14, I started proving my love and devotion to my wife by making a commitment to never engage in any kind of sexual activity until our wedding day. Of course, I had no idea who my future wife would be at that point. In fact, we didn't meet for six more years. But the commitment I made to her that day was very real.
Don't get me wrong. There were times when it was tough to stick to my decision, like the time when I was 17 and had my first serious girlfriend. I tried to tell myself my commitment to abstinence was a stupid, childish decision that meant nothing. I came close to messing up, but I stopped before anything beyond a kiss happened.
Three years later I met her. I knew almost instantly she was the love of my life; the woman I had been waiting patiently for all these years. And sure enough, our wedding night was the first time I ever engaged in any type of sexual activity. After five years of marriage, I assure you the decision I made when I was 14 was one decision I have never regreted!

The Definition of Abstinence
According to the dictionary, abstinence means to ab stain or avoid indulging in an activity such as gambling, alcohol or sex.
So let's say you decide to make a commitment to sexual abstinence until marriage. Here's something you need to consider. Does your commitment to abstinence mean you plan to avoid any kind of sexual activity until your wedding day or do you merely plan to avoid going all the way until your wedding day? There really is a big difference.
Evidently, there are some young people embracing the abstinent lifestyle with the mindset of not going all the way until their wedding day. In other words, they might touch under clothes, engage in oral sex, shower together or put their bodies' skin-to-skin (sexual area to sexual area). Then they slam on the brakes and stop right before going all the way. And they call this abstinence. This so-called "abstinent lifestyle" became apparent in a study published in Pediatric Journal where 140 young people out of 1,400 self proclaimed virgins ended up testing positive for sexually transmitted diseases.
Not only is it true that a person could become infected with STDs without technically going all the way, it's also possible (although rare) for a girl to become pregnant by merely engaging in skin-to-skin sexual contact. In other words, if a guy and girl remove their clothes and the guy ejaculates near the girl's vagina, it's possible a small amount of sperm could make its way into her vagina. Remember - it only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg. And Voilą - you're suddenly dealing with a pregnancy!
Perhaps with Valentine's Day rapidly approaching, you might want to consider making a commitment to your future husband or wife as the young man in the previous story. However, it might be wise to carefully define abstinence.
Lots of teenagers are now wearing commitment rings as a reminder to themselves, their parents, friends and future spouse that they have set strong boundaries to prevent sexual activity from occurring until their wedding day. What about you?
As a family, define your family values: What does sexual abstinence mean in your family?
