Parental Controls at Your Finger Tips!

Written by Ben Smith, Program Manager for Aim For Success, Inc

Over 80 percent of American households own a computer. Over half have high-speed Internet access. Once the computer is hooked-up and the Internet is installed, our parental responsibilities escalate to a new level as we find ways to protect our children from predators and block harmful websites.

Whether you use Vista, Windows 7, or the Mac operating system, parental controls will allow you to monitor your child's time on the computer, websites they visit, and even chat conversations. Parental controls are built into these operating systems. The good news is there is no extra software to purchase.

I have four children. My oldest three (ages 10, 8 and 4) have their own laptops. So protecting them while online is top priority. Their computers useKids using Computer Vista and Windows 7 and I use the Mac operating system. Customizing the parental controls for your child's age (whether preschool or teen) is easy.  Because my children are young, I have their computers set at a high security level. Therefore, before opening a new website, they have to get permission from the administrator, which is my wife or me. Once we give permission by entering a password, they are free to enter the website at any time without having to come to us.

We set game limits to only allow games that are rated E for everyone. We also set time limits. We set their computers to log off at 9 p.m. and not allow them to log back in until 7 a.m. Other options include the ability to control which programs they use, who they can add to instant messaging, and even who they can send and receive emails from. The Mac parental controls will also allow you to decide how many total hours they can use the computer on any given day.

If you're looking for something that is easy to use, with no software to buy, parental controls are the way to go. However, the best parental control is talking. Talk to your children about the dangers lurking online. Explain that because of these dangers, we all need to stay alert and do whatever is necessary to protect our family.

Facts Every Teen Needs to Know

Last year over 700,000 teenage girls in America got pregnant. Most thought it wouldn't Pregnant Bellyhappen to them. But in reality, every day about 2,000 girls become pregnant.
A pregnancy will dramatically change a teenager's life. Once she is pregnant, her life will undoubtedly become much more difficult. That is why Aim For Success, Inc has encouraged abstinence until marriage for the past 18 years.

 Did you know:

A pregnancy is possible every time you have sex - even if it's your first time. No form of contraception guarantees protection.

Sex won't make him yours and a baby won't make him stay.

8 out of 10 guys don't marry the teen mothers of their babies.

Babies may give a lot of love, but they require even more.

Parenting is a 24/7 lifetime job. Teen parenthood is hard on teens and worse for their babies.

Babies born to teens suffer from more health and developmental problems; are more likely to be abused and neglected; will probably be raised by a single parent and grow up poor. Their daughters are more likely to be teen moms and their sons are more likely to end up in jail.

Teen pregnancy is 100% avoidable - those who don't have sex, never worry about a pregnancy.

Do yourself and your future children a big favor - save sex for marriage! Remember, most American teens have not had sex. It's great to wait!

  Family Discussion

Discuss any drastic changes that would occur if a teen in your family had a baby.

  1. What room in your house would become the baby's room?
  2. Who would get up for the night time feedings?
  3. Who would care for the baby during the day?
  4. Who would pay for the diapers, food, clothes, etc.? Note: Formula, diapers and all the other items a new born requires the first year runs about $10,000.
  5. What would a baby do to your dreams and goals?
  6. How do you think your parents would respond if you told them you were involved in a pregnancy this year?
  7. What would their response be if you were 26 and married?

Happy New Year!
