Regrets of Sex
By Marilyn Morris,
 President of Aim For Success

Mindy was seventeen when she gave her virginity ABC's Bookto Kyle, the love of her life. One month later she developed painful blisters around her sexual area. She was devastated when her doctor told her she had herpes. By passing this infection on, Kyle drafted Mindy to the ranks of the 45 million other Americans who have genital herpes.

Although Kyle and Mindy have the same disease, their symptoms have been very different. Mindy now experiences recurring blisters every couple of months. With time the sores may eventually disappear, or Mindy may have them off and on the rest of her life.

Kyle, on the other hand, is asymptomatic - no symptoms, but highly contagious. He had no idea he had a sexually transmitted disease until he infected Mindy. He had sex with two other girls before he met Mindy. Obviously, one of those girls had herpes. Kyle may never have an outbreak of the sores, or it might be months or years before they suddenly appear.

Although Kyle and Mindy are not going to die from herpes, they must deal with the emotional pain and embarrassment that they have an incurable, sexually transmitted disease.

Unfortunately, Kyle did not end up being the love of Mindy's life. Three months after she contracted herpes, they broke up. Now, Kyle and Mindy have to face the very real probability of passing this incurable disease on to any future sexual partners, including their spouses.

CoupleA college student once told me the most difficult part of herpes, besides the painful sores, is determining when to tell a guy she's dating that she has an incurable, sexually transmitted disease.  She certainly doesn't want to tell him too early because if this relationship isn't going anywhere, it's none of his business. Yet, she feels it's not fair to wait until things are progressing into something serious and spring it on the guy.

If only these three people had simply chosen to wait until marriage to have sex - they would be free from the emotional and physical pain of genital herpes. Abstinence = Freedom from STDs!

Facts about Genital Herpes
From the CDC Fact Sheet

About 45 million Americans ages 12 and up are infected with genital herpes. Although sexual contact is basically the only way this incurable disease is spread, the symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. For example, most people never know they are infected.  They merely become carriers of the disease.

Then there are those who become infected and a couple of weeks later begin to develop painful blisters around the sexual area. The sores will probably last two to four weeks and then return four to five times a year. This cycle can continue for years, but often decreases with time.

Another possible variation is where an infected person goes along for years with absolutely no symptoms and then one day, out of nowhere, the blisters appear.

One last variation to this scenario is the saddest of all. An infected woman can give birth to her baby, and if the mom has genital herpes, she can pass the disease on to her baby at birth. In such a case, the baby probably won't deal with painful blisters, but may deal with other serious problems like brain damage and even death. That's why if the doctor knows Mom has genital herpes, a cesarean will usually be performed.

It's important to understand a person infected with genital herpes can be contagious with or without symptoms. While anti-viral medications can shorten and prevent outbreaks, they are not a cure. In fact, there is no cure for genital herpes.

Regarding condoms, the CDC says genital herpes can spread to areas not covered by the condom. Therefore, condoms can reduce the risk of genital herpes only when the infected area is covered . . . If that doesn't sound like enough protection to you - there is an option that guarantees protection: Saving Sex for Marriage. Two people faithfully committed to each other for life enjoy total FREEDOM from STDs - including genital herpes!

A Reminder to Parents
From Marilyn Morris, president of Aim For Success

If you purchased my books Teens Sex and Choices and the parent companion book ABCs of the Birds and Bees for Parents of Toddlers to Teens and they're merely collecting dust on the book shelf - now is the time to retrieve the books and go through them.

According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy:

87% of teens said it would be easier to postpone sexual activity and avoid teen pregnancy if they were able to have more honest conversations about such issues with their parents.

88% of parents of teens believe they should talk to their kids about sex, but often don't know what to say, how to say it or when to start.

TSCTeens Sex and Choices makes talking about sex a piece of cake. I take care of the difficult part of explaining the details and all you do is discuss your family values at the conclusion of each chapter.

ABC's BookABC's of the Birds and Bees empowers parents of toddler to teens to become their child's sex educator and answers 50 of the most frequently asked questions.

So, go for it. You won't regret it!

If you don't have a copy of these books and want a copy you can order them here.
