Cumberland and York County Preliminary DFIRMS Released

Joseph Young,
Mapping Coordinator

FEMA delivered preliminary maps for Cumberland County communities to review during the week of May 20th and York County towns should be receiving their maps on or about June 9th. The deliverance of these maps will mark entry into the final phase of remapping of floodplains in these two counties. The new products will be in digital format allowing for integration into other GIS products such as parcel and zoning maps.

Community review of these maps is of critical importance to ensure the most accurate maps possible. Special attention should be focused on the coastal communities. Many of these communities have received new engineering studies and re-delineation of flood plains. There may be some substantial changes in flood zones so it is important that community officials and code enforcement officers be aware of the changes.

Property owners may find their property with in a floodplain in the new maps resulting in the need for flood insurance if they do not have it already. By buying insurance early they could minimize premium costs by entering the program at the lowest premium level for being outside a floodplain. This gives the owner a grandfathered status that ensures discounted pricing once the new maps become effective.

If you have any questions regarding the mapping process please contact Joseph Young.

Hundreds Attend Maine Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference

JoAnn Mooney

State Hazard Mitigation Officer

More than 500 people attended the First Annual Maine Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference held at the Augusta Civic Center on April 30 - May 1, 2009.
One attendee echoed typical comments by writing, "The best part of the conference was listening to presenters with experience, either in an actual incident or planning expertise!"

In an effort to address emerging issues at the time of the conference, Dr. Dora Mills added a presentation on the states' response to the H1N1 virus.  The H1N1 presentation was well received by the attendees and the information was subsequently used by many communities in their own response to the virus.

Attendees had the opportunity to attend break-out sessions that were organized by topics that included Business Preparedness, Community Preparedness, HAZMAT, Incident Responses, Natural Hazards and Planning, Operations and Response, Public Health and Home Preparedness, School Preparedness, and Volunteer Opportunities.

The two-day conference attendees included the American Red Cross, business owners, emergency management, the EPA, federal and state agencies including FEMA, fire departments; law enforcement; Maine CDC, schools, the Small Business Administration, volunteer agencies including the Maine Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster and the Citizen Corp, and many individuals who help Mainers prepare for different types of emergencies.

The conference was organized and sponsored by the Maine Association of Local Emergency Managers, State Emergency Response Commission and the Maine Emergency Management Agency.

Mark your calendar - The Second Annual Maine Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference is already scheduled for May 24-25, 2010 at the August Civic Center.  Please reserve those dates on your calendar and watch for additional updates.  For more information on the Annual Maine Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference please contact the Co-Chairs:  Dwane Hubert and Robert Gardner of Maine Emergency Management Agency at 207-624-4400.
