longwall miningLongwall Mining Delegation to Southern Illinois
Montgomery and Macoupin Counties, Illinois
Friday April 9 and Saturday, April 10, 2010

Longwall mining is Illinois' version of mountaintop removal mining. Planned subsidence lowers land 4 to 6 feet, causing prime farmland to pond.  It also cracks building foundations and walls, contaminates streams and damages septic systems  and wells.  Come with Eco-Justice Collaborative as we visit what may be the site of the largest coal mine in the nation.

Total cost for this delegation is $150, which includes travel, lodging, educational materials and program.  Meals are not included.  Interested?  Contact us for details.

This will be our second delegation to Coal River Valley, the place where coal mining and climate change converge through activism by local residents.  The purpose of this delegation is to link the negative impacts of mining, processing and burning coal with its devastating environmental and community consequences, and to empower delegates to join efforts underway to stop mountaintop removal mining and phase out coal-fired power plants.

Total cost for the three-day delegation is $300, which includes orientation, travel, lodging, educational materials and program.  Meals are not included.  Click here to download an application.

If you are interested, contact Pam or Lan Richart by sending us an email, or call us at 773.556.3418 and we will contact you right away.  Click here to view photos from our June inaugural delegation and join our "in progress" facebook page!
