350 ppm - The Maximum Safe Upper Limit
|
You probably know that leading scientists believe that 350 ppm is the maximum concentration of CO2 that we can maintain in our earth's atmosphere if we are to avoid catastrophic consequences of global climate change. But - did you know that we are now at 390 ppm and climbing at a rate of about 2 ppm each year?
Join us this Saturday at 1:00 PM at 1111 W. Cermak in Pilsen, near the Fisk Generating Station, one of two coal-fired power plants in the City of Chicago, as we rally together for a stable climate. If you don't live in Chicago, click here to find a rally near you.
Your participation will send a strong message to our representatives, senators and President Obama that it is crucial to put aside partisan politics and special interests and instead, draft strong, science-based climate legislation - using policies and technologies that we know will bring our emissions down to safe levels, while creating jobs and saving consumers money.
What are these technologies and policies? Here's just a few....
1. Conservation and a wise use of our resources, instead of an ever-increasing demand for energy.
2. Energy efficiency, instead of wasteful consumption.
3. Solar arrays and wind turbines, instead of coal-fired power plants.
4. Tree planting, instead of clear-cutting our rainforests.
During the rally, we will hear from voices most affected by mining, processing and burning coal and from Alderman Joe Moore, who is considering introducing a new Clean Power Ordinance to the City Council. A march toward the Fisk coal-fired power plant will begin promptly at 2:00 PM.
So "come on down" to Pilsen, and add your voice to many for change!
