Happy June!!
With the school year just weeks from ending we have been visiting some of the local schools, attending career fairs and doing some fitness workshops in some of the classes. We love sharing our story and bringing the fun of what we do into the classroom. We are looking forward to working even more intimately with the schools in the fall.
We have added a few new sections to the newsletter that I wanted to highlight. Each issue we will be featuring a different nutrition or teen expert as well as an interview with an athletic director. This issue we began by interviewing Norm Lacey who has been the athletic director of SAMOHI for 30 years!!! That is almost as long as I have been alive (just kidding, Norm!!). Physical education has evolved quite a bit during that time and with that, as Norm points out, has brought many challenges as well. I went to a Jewish private orthodox school and our football field/track/student parking lot were one and the same. We used to hide behind cars to avoid having to walk around the lot. Even I used to do this and I was really into fitness!!! My teacher did not really lead by example as she just stood around mostly. Norm shared with me his story and how he leads by example and is constantly working on bringing innovative programming to the SAMOHI students. We are looking forward to being a continuing part of this as well with Energy Rocks and other programs we are developing. Please take a few minutes to read what Norm shared.
O2 MAX has been shaped for teens and by teens and because of that we are so excited to have our interns with us this summer to help us shape the next stage of O2 MAX. We have some exciting projects in the pipeline which will be revealed as the summer progresses.
AND we made our TV debut this past week-check it out :)
Thanks for reading and stay fit!

PHYS ED OVER THE YEARS
|
 An interview
with Norm Lacey
Athletic Director, SAMOHI
O2 MAX: How have you seen PE
requirements for schools evolve over the years?
NL: When I first started,
students were required to take 3 years of PE. Now they can elect to take
just 2. Kids aren't as motivated to move and play sports after school. In
the old days kids played sports all the time after school. We used to
offer surfing, outdoor skills, cycling, swimming but a lot of them don't exist
anymore. There is a new generation of legislation that exists when you take
kids off campus.
O2 MAX: What improvements can be implemented?
NL: Introduce
dance and pilates and most of all, make it fun! Find activities the kids
enjoy participating in!
O2 MAX: What role does the government play in PE?
NL: In
California,
the law requires that if a student fails 5 out of 6 standards that they retake PE-but only until their sophomore year. The school
district needs to decide if it will require all kids to keep taking PE beyond their sophomore year. We
need to do a better job in tracking students that didn't pass the PE test that year. Two years ago, 42% failed the testing standards! Legislature is trying to pass a law that will require kids to keep taking
PE until they pass.
O2 MAX: How
does the budget impact quality of PE?
NL: When
towels were cut it made kids not want to shower as much which meant they were
not as inclined to get sweaty! Uniforms tend to be funded separately.
O2 MAX: What do you hope to see happen
in the long run?
NL: We need to continue to find
ways to get all kids moving. Not everyone is athletic so we need to offer more
options that will engage all kids.

Mmmm....JELLO!!!
Enjoy these fun to make Jello Pudding Cubes. It's a great summertime treat to keep the kids happy and calories low! Take your favorite flavor of Jello sugar-free pudding mix and make it
according to the package. Pour the mix into an icecube tray and
allow to freeze. Pop them out when you have a craving for something sweet and delicious! If you prefer them on a stick, pop a popsicle stick in the center of each cube prior to freezing.
