Autumn blooms
Isn't October fabulous in Nebraska? I just had a friend
from Seattle come to visit and I decided that this is the
month I should invite all of my friends from across the
country to explore "the good life." For some strange
reason, the ones who visit in January and July never seem to return. What's up with that? |
Collaborative planning and problem-solving
We're currently coordinating two projects that are pulling together diverse groups of stakeholders to develop statewide strategic plans for major public health issues. We've begun by casting a wide net inviting people and their organizations to participate in a collaborative process with a "big picture" focus. Next, we're working to establish common ground and a shared focus, building relationships that help grow respect and trust among participants. A crucial next step is to encourage participants learn what each other is doing to address their specific piece of the bigger issue, and what kinds of success each is having. Only then can the group start to pose and answer key questions like: Who is missing at this table? What are the gaps that none of us is filling? What efforts could be more successful if we formed partnerships? What policies or systems need to be changed in order for us to be more successful? We've learned that it's best to start with small projects that can be accomplished relatively quickly to fuel a "can do" group spirit. What lessons have you learned from participating in collaborative efforts among organizations or groups? Click here to share your story.

Some feedback on "board giving" One of our recent clients, Teri Roberts, Executive Director of the ARC of Lincoln/Lancaster County, responded to an earlier Idea Garden request for feedback on the delicate subject of setting "giving requirements/expectations" for board members. She writes, "We do not have board giving expectations at a certain level. Each board member gives at the level they decide is right for them. Some are givers of time and energy more than financially or they take on a specific project and provide a particular skill that others on the board do not possess which alleviates the need for our organization to purchase those services. As a membership organization, we do expect all board members to be members in good standing with regard to their annual dues through a bylaws stipulation and we do expect all board members to serve on at least one committee." For more information about the ARC, visit www.arclincoln.org. Thanks, Teri, for your valuable input. |
