Introduce your child to writing, counting and a classroom environment through arts-focused curriculum.

Teachers emphasize creativity, imagination, exploration, and active participation. In art, the emphasis is on process and progress rather than product. Children are encouraged to experiment with a variety of materials and techniques in order to expand their artistic expression and hand-eye coordination. Music instruction includes listening, singing, moving, and playing rhythm instruments. They develop an appreciation for the patterns and musical variety produced by rhythms and melodies. In drama and creative movement, students engage in role playing and movement utilizing their creativity and imaginations to their fullest. In Spanish students are introduced to the Spanish language in a fun and engaging manner using age appropriate methods. The alphabet, numbers, colors and basic conversation will be covered. (Spanish will not be taught Wednesdays during the Fall.)

Faculty Focus
Sensei Jane Freemas, Isshinryu Karate instructor, is a finalist for the Female Instructor of the Year in the 32nd annual International Isshinryu Hall of Fame Competition and Awards on July 29th & 30th.
A board of 10 high ranking black belt masters from around the country choose the finalists based on the outstanding contribution that the individual makes to the style of Isshinryu, and to the surrounding community in general. They also must be of impeccable character, and a role model to others. The finalists travel to Tennessee to compete.
Jane is a wonderful instructor, won this award in 2008 and was a finalist again in 2009. Darlington and all her students are truly lucky to have her as an instructor.

Drama instructor and actress Pat Jordan is regularly complementing her teaching with frequent live performances. She is performing her one-woman shows for the Civil War Commemoration throughout the Tri-State area, including Louisa May Alcott (also performed at Darlington on Nov 20!), Clara Barton, Mary Todd Lincoln and Dorothea Dix. Pat and Brittany Hughes (a student of our Chester Theatre Arts Program) will appear together in a play about Martha Washington and the young slave, Oney Judge, who escaped from the President's House in Philadelphia in 1796.

Student Spotlight
Brittany Hughes and Ciana Smoak, students in our Chester Theater Arts Program, were the recipients of Essay Awards presented by the Colonial Dames of Lemon Hill Mansion. This spring, the Colonial Dames of Lemon Hill Mansion and Women for Greater Philadelphia funded a field trip for all the students in Darlington's Chester Theater Arts Program to visit Lemon Hill Mansion and Laurel Hill Mansion in Fairmount Park. After the trip, the Colonial Dames of Lemon Hill Mansion sponsored an essay contest for the students to write about what they learned, and chose Brittany and Ciana's essays to receive the gift card prizes. They also generously donated gift cards to help support the continuation of the Chester Theater Arts Program this Fall.

Jessica Shelton, karate student with Sensei Freemas, is a finalist in the Young Female Karate-ka of the Year (age 12 and under) category of the 32nd annual International Isshinryu Hall of Fame Competition and Awards on July 29th & 30th. A board of 10 high ranking black belt masters from around the country choose the finalists based on the outstanding contribution that the individual makes to the style of Isshinryu, and to the surrounding community in general. They must also be of impeccable character and a role model to others. The finalists travel to Tennessee in July to compete.
