EMPLOYMENT: Beloved violin teacher and professional violinist. She performed in the Delaware Symphony, the Orchestra of the Philadelphia Opera Company, Hotel DuPont House Orchestra and was a free-lance violinist in the Casinos of Atlantic City.
She was a member of Local Unions: Local 661-708 AFofm, Atlantic City Musician's Union Local 311-641 Inc, AFiofm Delaware Musical Society and Local 77 Afofm the Philadelphia Musical Society.
ORGANIZATIONS: Church: Long time member St Luke's Greek Orthodox Church, Broomall, PA
OTHER: Athena Sophocles was a woman devoted to her home, family and music. Her favorite time was spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She lived a blessed cultural and family life. She volunteered her time as Director of Darlington Arts Center from 1981 to 1990.
Athena received the Darlington Fine Arts Center Service Award 1990, Women's Resource Center Achievement Award 1990, Girl Scouts of Delaware County Women of Achievement Award 1991 and was the first female member of the Concord Rotary Club, Concordville, 1990.
Wife of 59 years to the late Ford Michael Sophocles, DDS who died in 2005. Mother of the late Michael Sophocles.
SURVIVORS: Survived by Two Daughters: Diana Hemmenway and Connie Sophocles; One Son: Dean Sophocles. Also survived by Seven Grandchildren and Three Great-Grandchildren; One Sister: Julia Haldas.
