A metallic lattice of hair-thin pipes is now the lightest solid yet created - less dense than air, scientists revealed.

The strategy used to create these intricate structures could lead to revolutionary materials of extraordinary strength and lightness, including ones made of diamond, researchers added. UC Irvine researchers at the National Fuel Cell Research Center have created a unique fuel cell generator that simultaneously and continuously converts gas created in wastewater digesters to hydrogen used for zero-emission vehicle fuel, electricity and heat in a highly efficient manner. California's Innovative Water Recycling Runs Afoul of California's Aggressive Climate Laws
Researchers in UC Irvine's Urban Water Research Center have teamed up with Amy Townsend-Small, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati, to discover that wastewater recycling facilities are emitting three times as much nitrous oxide (N2O) as a conventional process that sends treated sewage to a river or ocean. This news has also been covered by EcoSeed and ClickGreen.

Assistant Professor Jasper A. Vrugt, Ph.D., Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with a joint appointment in Earth System Science, was awarded the Young Scientist Award, also known as the Donath Medal, by the Geological Society of America (GSA).

 Foldavalve Kheradvar Assistant Professor Arash Kheradvar, M.D., Ph.D., The Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technology, has received a pair of grants for continuation of his research on the development of a novel self-expandable bioprosthetic heart valve for percutaneous delivery and implamentation.

William Tang Collaboration Receives Over $2.7 Million from DARPA

William C. Tang, Ph.D., associate dean for research, and professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering with a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, was awarded a grant of over $2.7 million by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under the Microscale Rate-Integrating Gyroscope (MRIG) program.

Assistant Professor Elliot L. Botvinick, Ph.D., Department of Biomedical Engineering, received a 2011 Pilot Grant from the Insititute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at UC Irvine for "A bloodless laproscopic cutting tool."
