The reception will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the UCI University Club

Business attire is recommended, and an RSVP with your graduating class year is requested by February 11, 2008, to snhayden@uci.edu or 949.824.3923.

eweekUCI to Celebrate 35th Annual National Engineers Week - Feb. 18 - 22, 2008
February 18 - 22, 2008 will mark UC Irvine's 35th celebration of National Engineers Week.

Alumni are welcome to participate in the following events:
  • Monday, Feb. 18, 2008:  Disneyland: Behind the Scenes! 

    Join us for an overview of engineering applications used within theme park attractions at the Disneyland® Resort. Hear from the engineers responsible for the design, and how engineering and creative intent are merged together to provide these unique experiences. Space is EXTREMELY limited and is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Guests must be 18 years or older, and understand that the tour will include walking and climbing stairs in the backstage areas.  To RSVP, email Courtney Billing, cbilling@uci.edu.

  • Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008:   The EngiTECH Career Fair.  More than 50 engineering and technical firms will be on campus looking to hire the best and brightest.  For more information, or to view a complete list of participating companies, visit:  http://www.eng.uci.edu/node/1278
  • Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008:  Engineering Alumni Reception.   Reconnect with former classmates and make new acquaintances at the first annual E-Week Engineering Alumni Reception.  The event will be held from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the UCI University Club.  Refreshments will be provided and parking is complimentary to all who RSVP with their class year on or before Feb. 11, 2008, by emailing snhayden@uci.edu or calling (949) 824-3923.  Business attire recommended.
  • Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008:  The E-Week Barbecue and Design Project Review.  The highlight of E-Week will feature student competitions such as the Rube Goldberg, Catapult, and Egg Drop Contests, and many more! Alumni are welcome to attend the barbecue from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., or serve as competition judges.

Recent Engineering Alumni Special Events
  • On December 2, 2007, the Engineering Alumni Advisory Council hosted its Fall Alumni Tour at Edwards Lifesciences in Irvine, Calif.  A group of 12 engineering alumni toured the Heart Valve Museum Center, a 4,000 square-foot museum dedicated to the history and evolution of the Edwards Lifesciences mission in helping patients with cardiovascular disease through cardiovascular surgery.  The group participated in an interactive tour of the heart valve manufacturing process, and learned about the history of the Mechanical Heart Valve, Biological Heart Valve (Tissue), and the Ring Repair Products.

  • The 8th Annual Alumni/Student Career Night saw its highest attendance to date on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007.  More than 120 undergraduate and graduate students joined twelve alumni to talk about career options in various engineering disciplines, the prospect of graduate school, tips on networking, and many other important topics.  Many thanks to our wonderful alumni speakers:  Donald Bollella, '04; Jun Cao, '04; Sky Ellsworth, '98, '01; Ted Hsieh, '85; Alex Jordan, '07;  Goran Matjiasevic, '85, '91; Mike Maxwell, '04; Benjamin Medvitz, '96; Cindy Miller, '94; Mark Minot, '91; Nayla Nassif, '96; Stephen Palm, '87; Joon You, '02, '04; and Tom Valencia, '97. 
Class Notes

Catherine Medvitz

Benjamin Medvitz, '96, and his wife, Amme, welcomed their second daughter, Catherine Maile Medvitz, on October 23.  They also have a two-and-a-half year-old daughter, Isabella.  Benjamin is director of engineering at DataAire, Inc.

Eric Shen, '93, M.S., '95, civil engineering, assumed a new position as director of transportation planning at the Port of Long Beach, the second busiest port in the United States.

EECS Professor Tsai Receives Distinguished Alumnus Award

Chen Tsai, Ph.D., professor of electrical engineering and computer science, was recently awarded the 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Award for Research Achievement from the National Taiwan University (NTU).  Tsai was recognized in the area of Applied Science and Engineering for his seminal contributions in integrated optics and ultrasonics science and technology.
