When
is the right time for bright students to start academic planning? The
answer is, NOW. Students
who are advanced intellectually, will need to make choices about coursework
selection sooner than typical students. Unfortunately,
very little guidance is provided by public schools before grade 11. We believe all gifted students should have academic
plans in place which serve as a road map for course taking beginning around 6th
grade. Many
students who wish to take advanced coursework in high school learn too late
that they should have taken a prerequisite course sooner. Academic
planning can avoid these kinds of situations.
Come to our information session on Jan 5 to get more details on academic planning.

News from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA)

By Aakash Bhattacharya

A few years ago, Ben Fusaro asked me what I thought was the most important college course for an undergraduate. I replied in an instant: Statistics. Ben agreed. His innovations in mathematical modeling and environmental mathematics appel to our advanced students. Statistics, on the other hand, could help all undergraduates in both their future personal and professional lives.
In 2005, the department of Education released and report that revealed mathematics to be the most serious obstacle to college graduation in the United States. The report described mathematics and an "insurmountable barrier" for economically disadvantaged college students. We should be looking to fix this.
By John Loase, Chair of the Mathematics Department at Concordia College, NY.
Excerpted from MAA Focus, December 2007, Vol 27, Number 9, Page 23
Note from Aakash: The article goes on to talk about techniques that teachers should use to help their students. However this article shows that, not only will doing challenging mathematics help you get into college, it will also help you during and after college and give you that extra step on your graduating class....

Why Math Club ?
|
To Prepare for Math Competitions
We
believe that bright students thrive on competition with similar ability peers,
and need meaningful recognition of their abilities to be able to develop to
their full academic potential. Competition
is used as a way to encourage and reward students to reach higher than the
standard public school curriculum. As
in other forms of competition, dedication towards practice and skill
development is required by the student. We
must understand that developing academic talent is no different than athletic
talent. If we are willing to commit our students for twice weekly
athletic practices and weekend contests (games), then it should be clear as to
the value of attending additional Saturday Math Club.
Fairfield Math Club is a math enrichment club started by Aakash
Bhattacharya, a Fairfield resident and a
sophomore at Choate
Rosemary Hall
High School. Aakash coaches elementary and middle school students for math contest preparation.
Previously, Aakash scored in the top 1% in nation in AMC 8 and was the FairfieldTown
winner in AMC 10 (high school contest for grade 10 and below) while he was
still at Tomlinson
Middle School. This year
Aakash qualified for the prestigious American Invitational Mathematics
Examination (AIME) of the Mathematical Association of America. Arjun Jain, Arvin Kalra and Anurag Chinnepalli, other members of the math club also coach elementary school students.

About AMC 10/12
|
The AMC contests are nationally
recognized competitions that are looked upon favorably by highly selective
colleges and universities during the admission process. Students who participate in the AMC 8/10/12 and
list continued participation in following years are considered in the same
manner as students involved in other full-time extracurricular activities. Participating in math contests is a unique
way to distinguish a student's application, as typically, very few students are
able to compete in mathematics, while it is much more common for a student to
be involved in sports! Students are recommended to take the appropriate level
math contest. Note that the levels are
not grade designations, but indicate the highest grade level of students who
may participate in that contest.
Therefore, younger students are always welcome to sit for the higher
level contest if their scores on the lower contest are sufficiently high. For more information on AMC competitions click here......
