The 2007 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) for high school students was held July 23-30, 2007 in Hanoi, Vietnam. The U.S. team members won two gold medals (Alex Zhai, Sherry Gong), three silver medals (Brian Lawrence, Eric Larson, Arnav Tripathy), and one bronze medal (Tedrick Leung). Russia's six-member team captured first place. They scored 184 out of a possible 252 points. Five of the six team members earned gold medals. The U.S. team placed fifth (155 points). In the official results, the other teams that came in ahead of the U.S. were China (181 points), South Korea (168), and Vietnam (168). Teams from 93 countries, with over 500 students present took part in the competition. At the IMO, the USA team has consistently finished in the top five for the last eight years. AMC 10/AMC 12 Scoring and Points: Remember : The score for a correct answer on the 2008 AMC 10 and AMC 12 is 6 points. The score for a blank is 1.5 points. The score for a wrong answer is 0 points. So unless you are fairly sure of the answer, it is better to leave a question unanswered than to guess. If you can reduce a problem to three possible answers it is advantageous to guess one of the three possible answers. If a student can only reduce to 4 possible answers by eliminating one of the possibilities, then it is not advantageous to guess. Also, note that with this scoring system it takes 14 correct answers and 11 blanks to score 100 to qualify for the AIME from the AMC 12. This scoring system requires 19 correct and 6 blanks to qualify for the AIME from the AMC 10.
Calculator Policy: Starting in January 2008, all AMC exams at all levels will not allow calculator usage. In particular, the 2008 AMC 10 A , 2008 AMC 12 A, 2008 AMC 10 B and 2008 AMC 12 B in February 2008 will not allow the use of a calculator. (The November 2008 AMC 8 also will not permit the use of a calculator.)

MathCounts 2008

The Nuts and Bolts
Eligible Participants
Students enrolled in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade are eligible to participate in MATHCOUNTS competitions.
Registration A school may register one team of four and up to four individuals for a total of eight participants. You
must designate team members versus individuals prior to the start of
the local (chapter) competition (i.e., a student registered as an
"individual" may not help his/her school team advance to the next level
of competition).
If your middle school has not registered for MathCounts 2008,
please advise them to do so. Alternatively you can ask your parent to
inform your math teacher and register for your school, with his/her
name as the coach. MathCounts only accepts school registration but you
can participate as an individual. Remember all mail comes to the school so your parent should ask them to be forwarded to him/her. If you get three other students from your school you can form a team (needs four). The registration deadline is
December 7, 2007, for late regostrations call MathCounts. You can register online here. You can check whether or not your school is registered here.
Levels of Competition
MATHCOUNTS competitions are organized at four levels: school, chapter (local), state and national. The School Competition is intended to be an aid to the coach in determining competitors for the chapter (local) competition. Selection of team and individual competitors is entirely at the discretion of coaches and need not be based solely on School. Chapter (Local) Competitions are held between Feb. 1 and Feb. 24, 2008 (at Fairfield University for Southwestern Connecticut). The Chapter Competition consists of the Sprint, Target and Team Rounds.
The Countdown Round (official or just for fun) may or may not be
included. Winning teams and students will receive recognition. The winning team
will advance to the State Competition. Additionally, the two
highest-ranking competitors not on the winning team (who may be
registered as individuals or as members of a team) will advance to the
State Competition. State Competitions are held between March 1 and March 30, 2008 (in University of Hartford for Connecticut). The
State Competition consists of the Sprint, Target and Team Rounds. The
Countdown Round (official or just for fun) and the optional Masters
Round may or may not be included. Winning teams and students will receive recognition. The four
highest-ranked Mathletes and the top team coach from each State
Competition will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the National
Competition.
