APAH Celebrates Buchanan Gardens Opening
Arlington officials and residents laud the importance of affordable housing
On September 10, APAH celebrated the completion of the Buchanan Gardens renovation. "With APAH's extensive renovation we have modernized this property to 21st century standards and created committed affordable homes for the next sixty years," said APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul. "We are honored to have the entire Arlington County Board, Congressman Jim Moran, State Senator Barbara Favola and Delegate Alfonso Lopez at this ribbon-cutting."

Dignitaries lauded the importance of affordable housing and APAH's partnership with Arlington County, Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA), Capital One Bank, Enterprise Community Partners, Hamel Builders and Wiencek+Associates plus many others to make Buchanan Gardens renovation a reality. Speakers included Rita Bamberger, Chair, APAH; Mary Hynes, Arlington County Chair; Congressman Jim Moran; Susan Dewey, Executive Director, VHDA; Corina Grant, Buchanan Gardens Resident; Ed Delany, Senior Vice President, Capital One and Nina Janopaul.

"It is really unheard of that we'd have this type of support at all levels of government," said Susan Dewey. "APAH is probably the premier affordable housing organization in Virginia, and probably the country."

"APAH is proud to have preserved not just the buildings but the community of Buchanan Gardens," Janopaul said.  "Seventy percent of our residents, who were relocated temporarily during our phased renovation, were able to return to

VHDA's Susan Dewey and Jim Chandler

an apartment community with new energy-efficient systems and modern finishes; new family-size, three-bedroom units; a community room; and a playground."

Corina Grant, who has lived at Buchanan Gardens with her son since 2009, said she was initially concerned about relocating temporarily during renovation, but she was very glad to return to Buchanan Gardens and have a brand new apartment in the neighborhood she has grown to love.

Arlington Mill Community Center Reaches Milestone
Construction begins on APAH's Arlington Mill Residences
Arlington Mill Community Center, which will be completed in mid-2013, marked a substantial milestone last week with a "Topping Out" celebration. The event marks completion of a substantial part of the structure; with this, the interior work can begin. The five-story Community Center will have a full-size gymnasium and exercise facility, classrooms for educational programs for residents of all ages and computer facilities. APAH's Arlington Mill Residences marks an important milestone as well. With the parking garage complete, APAH will begin construction of the four-story, 122-unit affordable Arlington Mill Residences later this month. Completion of the Residences will be by December 2013.
Summer is the Time for APAH Resident Picnics
North and South Arlingotn residents enjoy food and fun

APAH residents in North and South Arlington recently came out for the annual resident picnics. Volunteers joined APAH staff to serve food and lead children's activities. Resident picnics at Columbia Grove, Buchanan Gardens and Courthouse Crossings were sponsored in part by generous support from Hamel Builders and Kiwanis of Arlington.
