APAH Welcomes Your Year-End Contributions
Donate Today!
Your generous contributions help APAH to fulfill our mission and improve the lives of our residents. We work to provide committed affordable housing to hard-working Arlingtonians and support families who might be one paycheck away from homelessness. Arlington has lost 10,000 market affordable homes over the last decade. Your support will help us to intensify our efforts in 2012 to stem the loss of safe, quality affordable housing in Arlington. The need for affordable housing has never been greater.  Donate through the

New Playground Equipment Installed at Courthouse Crossings
Make Kids Smile Inc. donates and builds new playground
During one recent cold Saturday, Make Kids Smile Inc., a local nonprofit, and a certified installer led a group of volunteers from the Church of the Latter Day Saints to assemble and install a new piece of playground equipment at APAH's Courthouse Crossings property. Peter Ognibene and his family founded the Make Kids Smile organization in 1999 to provide safe playgrounds for less fortunate children. Sponsors generously contribute time and money to cover the equipment purchase. APAH thanks MKS, the volunteers and the Paradigm Management Company for contributing time and materials.

The first three buildings at Buchanan Gardens are completed and thirty families moved into completely renovated homes with new interiors, windows, appliances and heating and cooling systems. "We are very proud that we have retained 70% of our Buchanan Gardens residents since construction began. They are now beginning to move into their modernized new homes," said APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul. The second phase, which will include a new community room for resident services, will be completed in the spring.

Buchanan Gardens Family in New Apartment
New larger apartment in the community they love

BGfamily APAH residents Teresa and Franklin are all smiles when they talk about their new apartment and how helpful it has been in their lives. They are also glad they can stay in the Buchanan Gardens community where they have friends, family and are close to work. Their daughter, an energetic three-year old, is excited about going to the neighborhood school next year with her best friend and neighbor. An aunt also lives in Buchanan Gardens. Teresa works at the nearby McDonald's and Franklin can walk to work near Four Mile Run. Staying in an apartment so centrally located to their work has increased their job stability. They are looking forward to the new playground and resident services programs conveniently located in the new Community Center.

Arlington County Board Approves Building Purchase for Year-Round Shelter
APAH President/CEO supports year-round shelter to house Arlington's vulnerable homeless population

The Arlington County Board, after hearing testimony from community residents for and against the proposal, authorized County Manager Barbara Donellan to purchase a Courthouse office building (at 2020 N 14th St.). This is the first step toward creation of a year-round comprehensive homeless shelter.

"No one wants the homeless living on our streets in Arlington," said APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul. "It's inhumane, and it... costs our community dearly in terms of hospitalization and jail costs. A new year-round shelter and homeless service center will help our homeless transition into permanent supportive housing to lead productive lives. That's what we all want."
