APAH Awarded Prize for Innovation and Impact
Alington Community Foundation Board of Trustees Names Three Nonprofits

APAH will be honored at the December 5 luncheon in the first ever Arlington Community Foundation (AFC) Prize for Innovation and Impact. APAH shares this honor with the Greenbrier Learning Center and Leadership Arlington. Each nonprofit will receive a $10,000.

"APAH is honored to be recognized by the Arlington Community Foundation. We are constantly exploring innovative best practices to efficiently provide affordable housing at a time when land values are going up and the amount of affordable rental housing is drastically decreasing in our community," said APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul. "The need for affordable, stable, quality homes has never been greater.

AFC said APAH "has built the skills, track record and expertise to play a major role in preserving affordability and diversity in Arlington County and serving low income residents."

HOME Funding Comes Under Fire
The Importance of HOME to APAH and the Arlington Community

Recently the Washington Post contained an article critical of the HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME). HOME provides pass through funding to local jurisdictions who in turn work with nonprofits and private developers to develop and build affordable housing.

APAH has leveraged HOME funds of approximately $13.5 million to create more than 450 affordable housing units in Arlington, nearly half of our portfolio. In Arlington County, nonprofit developers have leveraged HOME funds to create a total of 11 affordable housing communities. Arlington's affordable housing projects have an excellent track record of on-time, quality work.

Don't be misled by isolated incidents and alarmist stories. HOME is a successful program that America needs now more than ever. For more information: visit the HUD's blog and search for "Setting the Record Straight: What The Post Got Wrong About the HOME Program." The HOME program has produced over one million homes for low income families. Only 2.5% of the 28,000 HOME projects underway last year were delayed (compared to 34% of all US housing starts which were delayed from the period of 2007-2010). Leadership Arlington Lunch Program on Housing
Housing:  The Equilibrium Challenge
APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul will participate in a panel with Arlington County Manager Barbara Donellan and Moderator, Scott McCaffrey, Editor, Sun Gazette, to discuss how the County balances Arlington's strong economy with the need for affordable housing. Employers need a range of housing options to attract and retain quality employees, but Arlington's current labor projections exceed our housing stock projections. Learn what creative housing strategies will help us build a community that is diverse, connected and meets the needs of the spectrum of residents we want to attract and retain at this December 7 luncheon program at WETA headquarters in Shirlington. Click on the link at right to register.
