Secret Santa/Adopt-a-Family a Huge Success
APAH donors connect with low income families | Eighty-eight APAH families, representing 307 residents, had a brighter Christmas holiday because of the kindness of APAH donors. For the third year, APAH sponsored an Adopt-a-Family program to match families in need with generous contributors. The community of donors came from throughout Arlington including churches, businesses and individuals. The 88 families represent 35% of APAH households who have children. Gifts included clothing, household items, toys and gift cards.
APAH and our management partner, Paradigm, teamed up to bring holiday cheer to all residents at Buchanan Gardens and Columbia Grove Apartments. Santa, with the help of staff, provided the holiday spirit and gave books and small gifts to all the children. |
Arlington Mill Residences Moves Ahead
Upcoming public forums seek input and approval | APAH introduced the Arlington Mill Residences to the Arlington County

Housing Commission Chair Holly Bray and APAH CEO Nina Janopaul | Housing Commission on January 6, 2011. This is one of a series of public forums that began in December and will culminate in a vote on the ground lease and use permit at the Arlington County Board meeting in February. "We aspire to build an innovative model of 'Public Land for Public Good,' to complement the County's new community center and to add new affordable homes on the rapidly changing Columbia Pike Corridor," said APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul at the Commission meeting. APAH will also present plans for the Arlington Mill Residences to the Planning Commission and neighborhood civic associations. The next step in this fast-moving project will be to apply for an allocation of tax credits to the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) in March.

Energy Efficiency at APAH Properties
"Green Grant" improves conservation at two APAH properties | APAH received an Arlington County grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to increase energy and water efficiency at two APAH properties. The improvements included a new boiler system at Carlyn Springs Apartments (4318-4322 N. Carlin Springs Rd.) and air sealing, improvements to the historic windows and installation of ceiling fans at Calvert Manor Apartments (1925-1927 N. Calvert St.). At both properties, APAH replaced all common area light fixtures with energy efficient fixtures. All toilets and showerheads were replaced with low-flow models and aerators were added to all faucets. Since installation, water bills indicate a projected water savings of 30% or an estimated one million gallons a year for both properties.
APAH is committed to energy and water conservation. We recently standardized energy efficient maintenance practices such as replacing toilet flappers regularly and using CFL bulbs at all properties. APAH has applied for additional funding to replace toilets at Courthouse Crossings and Cameron Commons. APAH's water saving efforts at Columbia Grove were featured in an Arlington's Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE) case study. |

The Views at Clarendon Overcomes Legal Hurdle
Court rules in favor of affordable housing development | In late December, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit upheld a ruling issued last May finding that Arlington did not violate the U.S. or state constitution by subsidizing the affordable housing projected affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Clarendon. This decision may mark the end of five years of lawsuits. View recent ARL.now and DC Mud news articles for more details. |
