Calling All Writers
A while ago, a student told me that she gets together every year with people she met here at the cooking school.  They have a big Mexican pot luck dinner and catch up with each other.

It made us think that we want to hear more of your stories from a class or culinary tour?

Did you meet someone here and fall in love?

Did you learn something that had an impact in some way?

How did your visit change something in yourself?

Please send us your stories.  We hope to publish some in the newsletter.

If we publish yours, we will send you a gift from our store, with appreciation!

Welcome to our new newsletter!
December 2007
Greetings!

Susana's PortraitSaludos de Oaxaca!

I hope all is well with you and your family. We have just started celebrating the Christmas posadas, the return of tourism to our beautiful city, and our new relationship with Rosa Mexicano, the wonderful group of Mexican restaurants in the States.

In September I became their new culinary advisor, the perfect job for me!  I am thrilled to be able to research and develop new recipes for special menus from our kitchen in Oaxaca and make occasional guest appearances at their restaurants.

Many years ago the original owner, Josafina Howard, was one of my  friends and mentors.  She was a wonderful person and chef trying to recreate Mexico in NYC.

The present owners have the same commitment to serving authentic, delicious Mexican food, and it feels natural to work with them. in October, Howard Greenstone and four of his head chefs travelled to Oaxaca to learn to make moles in the traditional manner for the Day of the Dead menu. Together we will continue to develop specials and menus from various parts of the Republic.

I wish you all the best of everything this holiday season full of warmth, great food, health, and  happiness with those you love!  May 2008 bring us all peace in the world and new ways to heal the earth.

Please come cook with us in our kitchen in Oaxaca or travel with us on an unforgettable adventure to discover the culinary delights of our beloved Mexico!

Un abrazo,
Susana

 Lila Downs
Singing for a good cause

Every year our friend, Lila Downs, returns to her mother's home state where she donates the proceeds from her fabulous concerts to a scholarship fund for young Oaxacan women.

We support this effort and invite all our staff and lucky students who are in Oaxaca at this time to enjoy the show!

La Casa de la Mujer raises the funds to give to  these deserving young women so that they can come from their small villages and study in Oaxaca City.

You can donate by contacting them here
