Spring Educational Program Recap

President's Message

Kevin Panetta Headshot

Greetings my fellow PCMA New Englanders,

I can't believe I'm writing this and we're already well into Spring and that Summer is quickly knocking on our door. Fortunately we have some exciting PCMA New England events to look forward to in the upcoming weeks.

First though, I'd like to personally thank all of you who attended our Spring Educational Program and a special thanks to our gracious host and sponsor, the Sheraton Boston Hotel. I hope we can see even more of you at our upcoming Summer Educational Program on June 5, 2012 at the Sheraton Commander Hotel in Cambridge.

In addition to our expected fantastic education and networking, this upcoming event also features two unique and exciting opportunities. David Fox Photography is graciously offering event participants free head shots for all that are interested. Feel like that LinkedIn photo is a little out of date or just want a highly professional photo to make you shine on your corporate website? Well then don't miss out on this amazing free opportunity. Oh and don't forget to bring your best smile!

Also at this meeting, we're offering a special one-time only opportunity for potential new members to join PCMA and the New England Chapter at amazing $100 discount! If you have a colleague or customer interested in joining PCMA and the New England Chapter, this is the time to take action. Bring them along we'll be sure to show them all they can gain by joining our crew! For potential new Planner members, there are a limited number of complimentary registrations to the June 5 program available. Let us know if you, or someone you know, is interested.

Lastly, I can't encourage you enough to make plans now and buy your tickets to everyone's favorite event of the year.....PCMA New England's Annual Summer Social at Fenway Park with the Red Sox vs. White Sox!!! The event is on July 19th and only a limited number of tickets are still available. Don't miss out on a PCMA New England tradition.

Thank you all for your continued support of the Chapter. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events. I also can't wait to meet the potential new members you plan to bring with you!

Sincerely,

Kevin Panetta

Some Assembly Required: Connecting the Pieces for Better Conference Experiences - with guest speaker Thom Singer, The Conference Catalyst

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

3:30 - 7:00pm

Sheraton Commander Hotel

Cambridge, MA

Networking opportunities are a main reason cited for attendance at conferences, conventions and seminars. However, most people never take full advantage of achieving meaningful connections with the other amazing people in the audience. Creating a culture for better conference experiences is a key to a successful event.

At PCMA New England's Some Assembly Required program, our guest speaker, Thom Singer, will help uncover how to network without silly ice-breakers, uncomfortable moments or forced elevator pitches. This program will demonstrate how to utilize networking in a manner that excites everyone from the extroverts to the introverts!

Learn how to:

  • Embrace a "networking culture" in the early stages of planning an event
  • Learn from events like TED and SXSW without becoming a weak attempt copycat
  • Create ways to lessen the impact of "Power Cliques" and break the ice without hokey ice breakers
  • Balance the mix of technology, aps, phones, etc... while encouraging human engagement
  • If you plan events, attend events or sponsor events --- you do not want to miss this meeting. It will be educational and experiential all at the same time!

SCHEDULE:

3:30 pm - Registration
4:00 pm - "Some Assembly Required" presentation with Thom Singer

5:30 pm - Networking reception

Spring Educational Program Report

PCMA New England kicked off the year with an exciting Best in Class program featuring industry experts Leslie Brand (@LLBrand) and Melinda Kendall (@melindakendall).

Workshop
The afternoon started with a hands on workshop on how to prove the value of your event to prospective exhibitors and attendees. Leslie and Melinda talked about market influences and how buyers make decisions. Participants learned how to develop a value proposition stating what makes their event unique and why theirs is the "must attend" event in their industry. Leslie and Melinda also talked about strategies for using public relations and social media to create a buzz about your event, using tangible examples of effective event promotions.

Presentation
During the second half of the program, Leslie and Melinda used case studies to present innovative ways that shows have set up their exhibit floors to be more interactive and engaging. Some approaches that they have found to be successful include:

  • Segmenting exhibitors by product categories or geographic region
  • Creating product demonstration/theater areas
  • Putting hands-on learning labs on the show floor
  • Creating gathering places on the show floor for people of like interests, such as a bloggers lounge
  • Seting up "Meet the Expert" roundtables in the exhibit hall
  • Using contests and games, such as a passport program, to get attendees to visit more exhibitors

The evening ended with a fantastic networking reception hosted by the Sheraton Boston Hotel.

At the event, PCMA New England collected travel-sized toiletry items to donate to Rosie's Place Rosie's Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women, offers emergency and long-term assistance to women who have nowhere else to turn.  Our thanks to all of the attendees who participated in the program and donated items!
