Dear Name,

I am proud to serve on the GenerationNation Board of Directors.  Our organization's name is new: this month Kids Voting Mecklenburg, Charlotte's K-12 civic education organization since 1992, becomes GenerationNation. What's not changing is our commitment and vision to educate and engage K-12 students to lead in their schools, communities and nation. Our work is needed more than ever:

  • Study after study shows that American students know little about civics and history. More can name the American Idol judges than the three branches of federal government. Across all demographics, students know even less about local and state government.
  • Civics and history are public school graduation requirements, yet due to education trends, budget cuts and learning opportunity gaps, many of today's K-12 students don't know how their governments and communities work.
  • At the same time time, our political climate is increasingly divisive.

Is this the best we can do for K-12 students...the next generation of leaders? Without civic literacy, students can't graduate or become effective citizens and leaders. Who's impacted by civic education? You. Me. Everyone.  Now, and for our future.

How can you help make a difference? By supporting GenerationNation, a nonprofit organization that builds civic literacy and leadership from an early age.

Please join me to help GenerationNation kick off a new year, and bright future, with a strong start. We're celebrating our 20th anniversary of connecting classroom education with community learning experiences to provide the only opportunity for the civic education of K-12 students in our community. You'll help us to provide needed civics  education resources to 5,000 local classrooms, and civic learning opportunities for tens of thousands of students.

Give Charlotte's students, and our community, a great benefit and advantage through civic education. You'll make a difference today, and for tomorrow.

With thanks,

* Kids Voting Mecklenburg is now GenerationNation.

The education-focused nonprofit organization, founded in 1992, changed its name in December 2011 to better reflect the wide range of educational tools and learning opportunities the organization provides, and envisions, to positively impact K-12 students in the Charlotte area.

Programs educate and engage students in government, leadership and civic life.  Core initiatives of GenerationNation include K-12 civic education and teacher training, Youth Civics, Youth Voice - Leadership Alliance, and the Kids Voting Mecklenburg election.
