First Quarter 2008

Dear Colleague,

What a pleasure to welcome the beautiful Spring weather!  As we approach the traditional vacation season, I'd like to wish everyone a safe and happy vacation - wherever your travels may take you.

In the upcoming months, the focus at IOC is on strengthening our radiology group and stabilizing our operations - including turnaround time.  A significant part of that effort is partnering with new IT vendors that can provide the support and stability that we would like to provide to our customers.  In addition, we've put more radiologists on per shift in order to ensure turnaround times stay low as volumes continue to increase, especially with the busy Summer season on the way.

As a testament to that fact, when compared to the teleradiology industry as a whole, our radiologists read fewer studies per hour.  This scheduling principle allows our radiologists to devote the proper amount of time to each patient's study, which helps to ensure more complete reporting and adequate time to speak with a referring physician, if necessary.  It's important that our radiologists remain focused on quality patient care and customer service, rather than feeling rushed through too many studies per hour.  Quality patient care and outstanding customer service are always our top priorities and we appreciate the patience of our customers as we continue to make improvements to our teleradiology technology.

I'd like to thank our customers for participating in our recent satisfaction survey.  We were very happy to learn that 98% of our customers would recommend us to a colleague.  We were also happy to know that we support our customers most by improving after hour patient care, ER patient turnaround time and after hour report turnaround time. We also noted areas in which we have the opportunity to improve. I look forward to a continued partnership with each of you.

Finally, I'd like to congratulate Pete from Peconic Bay Medical Center on winning our Technologist of the Quarter Contest.  Pete does a great job of proactively calling in histories and other important information which helps our operations run more smoothly.

I welcome the opportunity to speak directly with our customers. Please feel free to contact me with any issues, concerns or challenges your group may be facing to see if IOC can help.

Sincerely,

Brian Phelan

Technologist of the Quarter
Peconic Bay LogoPete from Peconic Bay Medical Center

Congratulations to Pete from Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, NY - he is the most recent winner of IOC's Technologist of the Quarter contest! Pete was nominted by several of IOC's Workflow Coordinators for being so friendly and helpful to everyone. "We never have to track him down," said Janine Purcell, IOC's Workflow Manager, "he always calls in a very detailed history right after the study is sent."  Everyone at the PBMC radiology department received dinner and dessert personally delivered by IOC's Clinical Services Manager.

If you know a technologist or maybe even a department full of technologists that should be nominated, let us know!  Send your nominations to Elizabeth Perley at eperley@imagingoncall.com.
Customer Satisfaction Survey Results
98% of our customers would recommend our services to a peer or colleague

In the middle of February, IOC conducted its first customer satisfaction survey.  The intent of the survey was to:

  • identify issues and concerns from our customer base
  • identify opportunities for product extensions
  • create a benchmark for future annual survey results

Close to 50% of our customers participated.  The great majority of responses were positive as 98% of the responders said that they would recommend IOC as a provider to a colleague.  The key requirements continue to be accuracy of the reads turnaround times.  Measures are already in place to ensure we live up to customer expectations in these areas.

We did find some customer interest in converting to Final Reports and also having IOC read studies in the areas of Breast MRI and Cardiac CTA.

When asked why they chose IOC as a provider, the most popular response (20%) was due to a recommendation.  When asked how IOC had improved their productivity, the most popular responses were improved after-hour patient care (30%) and Improved ER TAT (24%).

We plan to survey our customers on a regular basis as one way of keeping in touch with their ongoing service requirements.
Telemedicine After Dark
A $1 Billion Business

At the recent annual conference of the American Telemedicine Association, Howard Reis, Director of Business Development for Imaging On Call, delivered a paper which described the commercial teleradiology business. The talk highlighted the following areas:
  • A basic financial model of after-hour teleradiology
  • A comparison of the financial results of the two public teleradiology providers
  • A description of teleradiology workflow
  • Economic considerations for a radiology practice
  • A description of how the business will evolve from $1 Billion to $10 Billion

A copy of the paper and the slides can be provided by contacting Howard Reis at hreis@imagingoncall.com.

The Life of a Teleradiologist
Ana EcheniqueIOC's Own Dr. Ana Echenique shares her experience

Ana Echenique recently completed her first year as a radiologist for Imaging On Call. When asked what she liked best about the past year she complimented all of the people at IOC from the CEO, to the scheduler, to the Workflow Coordinators to the IT support. "It takes the frustration of being a radiologist down to zero," according to Ana. She likes the flexible scheduling and not being stuck on one shift all the time. Working eight hour shifts leaves the rest of the day open for hobbies like skiing (down hill and cross country), snow shoeing, kayaking, and beach volleyball, depending on whether Ana is working out of her home in Vermont or her home in Miami Beach, Florida. "As long as I have Internet access, I can get my job done" says Ana.
