In Memory of Krystine Amarou '02
Krystine Amurao '02
Krystine Amarou '02 lost her life in a car accident in Virginia on Feb. 18, 2008 while visiting friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Greetings!

At the most recent Alumnae Association meeting, I learned that a past teacher from FSHA ran into two of our alumnae in the great state of Wyoming, where she is now living. The first meeting was certainly unique, as the teacher was in the hospital delivering her baby and one of her nurses happened to be a graduate! Then, only days later while shopping for yarn for her new little one, she ran into yet another alumna.

These meetings were especially exciting to me as we have such a rich history and clearly, there are so many of us out there who remember our time at FSHA fondly and are eager to share those memories with others.

As the Alumnae Association prepares for the reunions of multiple classes this year, I often find myself in conversation with alumnae from decades past and the sentiment seems to be consistent. We are blessed to be a part of the history of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and proud to be helping with its future.

I encourage those of you interested in being a more active member of the Alumnae Association to contact us and start giving back to your alma mater. We have many opportunities to participate including a need for class representatives, event chairs, board members and more.

Finally, we are looking for our distinguished alumnae who have made considerable contributions to their community so that we can share your accomplishments with your fellow alumnae. If you are interested in telling your story, please contact the Alumnae Office.

We'll see you in April.

Sincerely,

Paula Orlandini '72
Alumnae Association President

Suegene Kim '01 Assembly

Ten years ago, Suegene Kim '01 was driving to a horse-riding competition and was tragically taken from us in a car accident. In her memory, an assembly is held yearly with guest speakers who exemplify living a life dedicated to Catholic service. On March 6, 2008, students filed into the SAC where they were handed a "Suegene Guardian Angel" pin to add to their lapels. A slide show ran in the background with photos and quotes displayed in honor of Suegene.

Members of the classes of 2001 and 2002 attended the assembly, and Kathryn DiPietro '02 served as the featured speaker. Kathryn spoke of her experiences as a teacher in a socioeconomically disadvantaged community and what it truly means to devote one's gifts in service to others. Suegene's parents, Peter and Sunnie Kim, were also present for the assembly. The Kim family established the Suegene Kim Fund in 1998 to provide scholarship funds to FSHA students as well as to annually recognize one senior for excellence in mathematics. The Fund also provided traffic signs to the academy following Suegene's death. The Kim's contributions to Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in the memory of their daughter have been substantial and deeply appreciated. Surely, Suegene would be proud!

Alumnae Spotlight: Gloria Borges '00

Gloria Borges '00, is nothing less than exceptional. ASB Vice President while at FSHA, class president during her junior and senior years at Duke University, part of the oldest law firm in California- she has always pushed herself to excel. Gloria Borges '00

Gloria is currently a litigator at O'Melveny & Myers, a full service corporate law firm in Los Angeles. A member of the General Trial & Litigation Department, she holds the responsibility of handling multi-district litigation. She is also part of the Intellectual Property & Technology Department. Whether figuring out strategies, researching and developing creative legal arguments or communicating with other attorneys and clients, Gloria finds being an attorney is both rewarding and enriching.

"I knew from about the age of 12 that I wanted to be an attorney. I've always found the idea of representing a person as her lawyer and protecting her rights and interests to be an incredible responsibility and honor."

Graduating magna cum laude from Duke University with a degree in English and a minor in History, Gloria went on to Stanford Law where she graduated in May 2007. In July of that year, she passed the California Bar Exam. Shortly thereafter, she married her college sweetheart. With so much happening in Gloria's world, it's hard to imagine there would be any additional time to spare. But where there's a will, Gloria finds a way!

Gloria with Senator ClintonGloria recently joined the grassroots campaign team for the democratic presidential hopeful, Hillary Clinton. Her work thus far has included making phone calls for the campaign to increase Hillary's local base and attending rallies and receptions. In the future, however, Gloria is completely ready to hit the road and travel to swing states to get out the vote should Clinton become the nominee.

At a recent rally at the Beverly Wilshire following the Los Angeles debates, Gloria had the fortune of meeting Senator Clinton. While the encounter was brief, it was both life-changing and life-affirming for Gloria. "I realized that I truly wanted the kind of life that Senator Clinton had pursued, one lived in service for the people of the United States."

Clearly, giving back to her community, state and country are priorities for Gloria. Not quite ready to run for president, she is happy to be with a prestigious law firm, married to a devoted husband and campaigning for someone who is an inspiration to women all over.
