August 2011
A Word from the President: Jane Maynard Dear Friends: It is a privilege for me to serve as the CADO President for 2011-2012. I have chosen to serve on the CADO Board because I am committed to the growth and development of clergy. Before I moved to this Diocese in 2004, I served as Professor of Pastoral Theology and Director of Field Education at CDSP. In this role, I worked with seminarians, helping them to discern their gifts and to prepare for ordination. In many ways, my work with CADO is an extension of this experience. My hopes for CADO include my desire that we will find new and creative ways to live into our four core commitments: collegiality, wholeness, formation, and advocacy.
Currently, I serve as Rector of Christ Church in Tacoma. My husband, Jim, is a software salesman at Intel and we have three grown children: Marc, Dan and Beckie. I look forward to seeing you around the Diocese and give thanks for your support.
In peace, Jane

Personnel Commission to recommend 3.5% COLA increase
The Personnel Commission has drafted a resolution for Diocesan Convention that would shift the clergy compensation scale upwards by 3.5%, according to Kevin Pearson, chair of the commission and president-elect of CADO.
The clergy compensation scale is linked to the consumer price index (CPI) which has not changed appreciably in the previous two years, resulting in two years during which the clergy compensation scale did not change.
CPI figures for the last year reveal a 3.2% increase in CPI. The commission added a .3% increase over CPI, reflecting their belief that the CPI will continue to increase in the coming year.

Health Insurance Parity reconsidered
Because of unintended consequences to Resolution A177 on health insurance parity passed at General Convention 2009, the Commission on Personnel will bring a resolution to Diocesan Convention to ask General Convention 2012 to suspend the resolution.
The Commission on Personnel has engaged in lengthy conversations, given a presentation at the 2011 Clergy Conference, hosted a conversation with rectors of "A" and "B" grade congregations who may be disproportionately affected by this change, provided four focus group meetings for lay employees and clergy throughout the diocese, and met with our bishop to learn about the issue in the wider church
Through these conversations the commission has learned that the impact of full implementation of Resolution A177 on congregations in the Diocese of Olympia would be significant. The reduction of clergy benefits to meet lay benefits would result in significant reductions in clergy compensation, particularly for clergy with multiple dependents.
Additionally, we have learned that there has been considerable discussion in the House of Bishops as they have faced the actual implementation of A177 on their congregations and on the mission of the church.
The COP strongly supports the intention of justice in health insurance for clergy and lay employees that drove the passage of A177 at General Convention. Yet we see that A177 has provisions with unintended consequences that could be perilous to congregations and distract from their mission. We expect to present a resolution to Diocesan Convention calling on General Convention to suspend the timeline for full implementation of A177 and to reconsider components of the legislation so that it both will support justice in healthcare and advance the mission of the church.
