QUOTE

"Every morning in Africa, an antelope wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion, or it will be killed.

Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest antelope, or it will starve.

It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or an antelope - when the sun comes up, you'd better be running."

Greetings!

We often use sports analogies to describe the business environment.  The group you work with is your 'team' and you 'go the extra mile' to delight your customer.  If your team comes up short for some reason, someone on the team 'dropped the ball' and you may have to turn to an executive 'coach' to help you determine if your 'game plan' was sound.  And on and on...

However you look at it, the struggling housing market seems like the soccer match that has gone into extra time and PK's, the baseball game into extra innings, the football game into overtime.  But it feels much more like a marathon (or dare I say, ultra-marathon), where endurance and focus are both critically important to survival.  As someone once said about running marathons, "first worry about finishing, then worry about finishing first."

If you're reading this it means you and your company have taken the necessary steps to make it this far into the Great Recession.  If you've done that, you can hopefully endure another year or two of what could continue to be a depressed home construction market.  And if that's the case, it might be wise to view this as a marathon and we only just passed the 14-mile marker.  You've come a long way but still have a long way to go.  Only by enduring and implementing a focused and winning strategy will you eventually reach the 'finish line.'

Until then, keep putting one foot in front of the other, and keep your eye on the ball!

'Normal' Housing Market Years Away

Economists at Wells Fargo Securities believe that although we're at the bottom of home sales and new home construction, a return to a 'normal' housing market in the U.S., where supply and demand are in balance and prices are rising 2 to 3 percent per year, is still years away.

Multifamily construction remains the bright spot, as apartment demand continues to benefit from the struggles of the housing market.

Update on International Codes
The 2012 International codes are now available in publication.

One nomenclature change reflects the changes in PS 1-09 and PS 2-10.  The 2012 International Building Code and the International Residential Code for One-and Two-Family Dwellings both include the term "Performance Category" to be used as the "nominal panel thickness" or "panel thickness" wherever referenced in these codes.  Additional information and full details on the 2012 International Codes can be viewed at 2012 International Codes.  Information and full details on the 2009 International Codes can be viewed at 2009 International Codes and References.

The 2015 I-Codes development cycle begins in 2012.  The deadline for public proposals to change the IBC is January 3, 2012 using the Public Proposal Form.  The IBC will be reviewed in 2012 and the IRC in 2013.  Additional information is available at 2012/2013 Code Development Cycle.

U.S. Residential Construction Data
The U.S. government publishes a report each month on new residential construction, which includes information on building permits and housing starts.  The report on New Residential Construction in August 2011 states that U.S. housing starts this August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 571,000, which was 5.8% below the August 2010 rate.  Not all news was bad, however, since building permits in August 2011 were 7.8% higher than in August 2010.
