Greetings!

The word of the times seems to be 'perseverance.'  If I can just get through this next day, week, month, everything will be OK.  For anyone associated in any way with home construction, you could add 'year' to that last sentence.

We all have challenges in our lives, both at work and at home, and the only thing to do is persevere.  One could give up, sure, but if there's a lesson in every experience, who wants that lesson to be one of failure?  Certainly not me.  Those of you who know me well know I collect quotes and sayings.  I have a bulletin board in my office plastered with note cards, some more than 25 years old.  I also have a framed picture of a stream, flowing through a canyon with sheer rock walls on each side, with the following printed underneath:

Perseverance
In the confrontation between the stream and the rock,
the stream always wins...not through strength,
but through persistence.

So this is our charge -- to persevere, to persist -- in this market, in these times.

Make it a great day, week, month ... year!

Active Hurricane Season Predicted

Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Hurricane Center and from Colorado State University (CSU) both predict an active hurricane season for the Atlantic basin this year.

NOAA predicts 12-18 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), with 6-10 becoming hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher) including 3-6 major hurricanes (winds of 111 mph or higher).  NOAA officials state that their ranges have a 70 percent likelihood of occurring, indicating that activity will exceed the seasonal average of 11 named storms and six hurricanes, two of which are major.

CSU is forecasting 16 named storms, nine of which are expected to turn into hurricanes, and five of those major hurricanes.

The official start of the Atlantic's 2011 hurricane season is June 1 and runs through November 30.  If storms receive names, the first five will be Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, and Emily.

This week, May 22-28, is National Hurricane Preparedness Week.  If you live or find yourself in one of the at-risk coastal regions, take a few minutes to see what you can do to prepare if a hurricane approaches.

PS 2-10 Standards Update
On October 29, 2010, NIST published a notice on PS 2-10 but incorrectly gave the title as 'Structural Plywood.'  NIST issued a new notice in February 2011 and reopened the comment period, which closed in March with no further comments or objections.  The standard will have an 'effective date' coinciding with NIST publication, which is anticipated to be sometime early this summer.

Housing Continues Sluggish Pace

Recent reports indicate that new home construction remains in its multi-year slump, with little signs of improvement.  In an AP article posted on MSN.com, the U.S. Commerce Department reported April figures with decreases in construction of single-family homes, apartments and condominiums, and in building permits (which are a measure of future construction).

In another article, at MSN Real Estate, forecasters say that the bottom of home prices may not be behind us, largely a result of the number of foreclosures that are on, or have yet to hit, the market.

TECO Approved for AS/NZS Plywood

TECO proudly announces the expansion of its certification capabilities, becoming accredited to certify and test structural plywood for Australia and New Zealand (by the Standards Council of Canada and the International Accreditation Service, respectively). The expansion gives TECO the ability to certify structural plywood in accordance with the Australian Standard/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS) 2269, Structural Plywood.  TECO certification is offered to manufacturers selling structural plywood in Australia and New Zealand.
