Dear :
Welcome to 2011. American author Bill Vaughn once said this about the changing of the year:
"An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves."
Now, I generally consider myself to be an optimist and am looking forward to what 2011 brings. Yet I can't deny that I stayed up late on December 31st to see 2010 put behind us. Given the depth and length of this housing slump and the toll it's taken on our economy and industry, who could argue against never wanting to live through another year like 2010 (or for that matter, 2009 or 2008). Most experts agree that the worst is behind us, so we have a reason to be optimistic about the coming year. After all, from where we all stand, it seems there's no place to go but up.
Here's wishing all of you the very best of luck and prosperity this year.

TECO Passes JAS Audit with Flying Colors
Since 1993, TECO has been approved to certify engineered wood products - specifically, plywood, OSB, LVL and glued-laminated timber - to the Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS). Each year, auditors from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) conduct a review of TECO's JAS certification and testing program in order to verify TECO's continued compliance with JAS requirements. In mid January, two MAFF auditors visited TECO's Eugene, Oregon, testing laboratory (where JAS testing is conducted) and also TECO's corporate office in Wisconsin, where the JAS program is managed. In both cases, TECO's JAS certification and testing program was found to be fully compliant.
Contact Greg Dupuis at TECO's corporate office with questions, or to inquire about JAS certification for your organization. greg.dupuis@tecotested.com (608) 837-2790 |
New/Revised TECO Tech Tips

MLB Continues Work with TECO
During the 2008 Major League Baseball season, MLB contracted with a team of technical experts to investigate the causes and help reduce the likelihood that wooden baseball bats break into multiple pieces during games. TECO became part of that technical team, which also included researchers from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory and professors at Harvard University and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Since that initial work, TECO and the rest of the technical team have helped reduce the incidence of multi-piece failures by almost 50 percent. MLB recently renewed TECO's contract for the 2011 season, so the work continues to improve the durability and safety of wooden bats during MLB games.

Sprinklers Requirements in Residential Structures
Several states, including California, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina, have adopted pro-sprinkler legislation in new one- and two-family residential construction in some form, all with an effective date of January 1, 2011.
However, in at least one case (i.e. South Carolina), implementation has been delayed by legislative action until 2014. Other states, like Wisconsin, began requiring sprinklers for new multi-family dwellings with three or more units on January 1, while not requiring sprinklers in new one- and two-family dwellings.
However, over 15 other states have taken the exact opposite approach, adopting anti-sprinkler legislation in some form for one- and two-family construction. Sprinklers have been a building code requirement for non-residential structures in most states for several years.

FSC Remains Alone for LEED
The U.S. Green Building Council confirmed in a vote on December 6, 2010, that the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) will continue as the only forest certification system that qualifies for LEED credit for certified wood.
While other forest certification systems, like the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), were being considered for inclusion under the LEED program, the proposed revisions failed to meet the two-thirds majority required to pass.

California Prop 65 Wood Dust
California's wood dust warning requirement went into effect on December 18, 2010. In December 2009, wood dust was added to California's Proposition 65 list as a substance known to cause cancer. Manufacturers of wood products that may be cut during use and/or installation (thereby creating wood dust) must provide reasonable warnings to consumers about the potential hazards of wood dust.
Per the requirements of Prop 65, anyone who purchases wood products should be made aware of the following:
WARNING: Drilling, sawing, sanding or machining wood products generates wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Avoid inhaling wood dust or use a dust mask or other safeguards for personal protection.

CA Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment
for additional information. |
