Dear  :

Next Tuesday in the United States is a national election day, and for our friends and colleagues in Brazil, this coming Sunday is.  If you have the opportunity to vote, you should take it.  First, not everyone in the world lives where the right to vote even exists, so if you have that right, don't take it for granted.  If you're not going to vote for yourself, vote for all of those around the world that wish they could.

Second, not voting reminds me of the following quote (which a version of can be attributed to a number of people):
"Bad politicians are elected
by good people who do not vote."

So if you're in the U.S. or Brazil, or somewhere else where elections will soon be held, add that date to your calendar...and vote. It's not just your right, but your duty!

Make it a great day!

California Prop 65 Includes Wood Dust

In December 2009, wood dust was added to California's Proposition 65 list as a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Wood products will expose individuals to wood dust when they are drilled, sawed, sanded, machined, or otherwise handled in a manner that will produce wood dust.  Wood dust is on the list and the warning requirement goes into effect as of December 18, 2010.  Agreement has been reached on recommended warning sign language and placement of signage in businesses.  Follow the links below for additional information on wood dust and California Prop 65:

Certification of Building Materials:  Important or not?
A new report from Dovetail Partners calls for greater use of certification and the expansion of programs to include certification of building materials beyond wood.  The report highlights the established use of certification programs for the evaluation of responsible sources of wood products, especially imported and tropical woods associated with the highest levels of environmental concern.  Although bamboo, cement, iron, steel, aluminum and other building materials are also imported from many of the same regions of the world, there are currently no certification programs or standards for the responsible management and extraction of these materials.

41 Senators Express Concern Over EPA Boiler MACT Rule

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and American Wood Council (AWC) commended the 41 U.S. Senators who sent a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson expressing their concerns about the threat to manufacturing jobs posed by EPA's proposed maximum achievable control technology rule for industrial boilers, commonly referred to as Boiler MACT.

"The proposed Boiler MACT rule could put thousands of jobs at risk in the wood products industry, which has already been particularly hard hit in recent economic times," said AWC President Robert Glowinski. "EPA can still revise the proposed rule in a way that protects the environment and saves the jobs our workers depend upon to support their families."
