SBA Website Lives On

In 2008, TECO acquired the assets of the Structural Board Association, including the SBA website with its wealth of information about OSB.  TECO continues to maintain OSBGuide.com, so please use this or TECO's own website to find useful information about the application and performance of OSB.

Hurricane Season Predicted To Be 'Near Normal'

Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predict a 'near-normal' Atlantic hurricane season, which officially began on June 1.  NOAA says there is a 70 percent chance that one to three storms could become major hurricanes (at or above a Category 3), of the nine to fourteen named storms predicted.

TECO Expands CARB Formaldehyde Test Facility
As a recognized Third-Party Certifier by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), TECO has certified several composite wood panel mills and is in the process of certifying others.  In order to meet increased demand, TECO's formaldehyde testing facility in Eugene, Oregon, is being upgraded and expanded.  Testing capability during expansion remains intact, and the renovation is expected to be completed sometime this summer.

Visit TECO's website to see a list of CARB-certified mills

Contact Steve Verhey, PhD, TECO's Technical Manager, at (608) 837-2790 or email at steve.verhey@tecotested.com if you have questions about the CARB regulations or how TECO can help your company meet its requirements.

Green Verification of Parade Homes
TECO is recognized as an Accredited Verifier under the NAHB National Green Building Standard, and has been selected by Loos Homes of Johnson Creek, WI, to verify its two Parade homes that are part of the Metro (Milwaukee) Builders Association Parade of Homes in Ixonia, WI, this August.  Jed Hannemann, TECO's Green Building Specialist, is working directly with Greg Loos of Loos Homes, who made the decision to use TECO after the MBA encouraged builders in its Parade of Homes to obtain green home certification.

PS 1 and PS 2 Committees
Two separate committees have been formed for the review and revision of the two primary standards for structural panels in North America. The PS 1 Standing Committee, which includes Dick Bower and Mike Russell of TECO, met in Las Vegas in February to discuss several issues related to the PS 1-07 Structural Plywood standard.  These included the California Weights & Measures vs. PS 1 panel thickness requirements, possible formaldehyde policy statement or formaldehyde testing requirement for PS 1, and some language to identify plywood as a "green" product.

Greg Dupuis is representing TECO on the PS 2 (Performance Standard for Wood-Based Structural-Use Panels) Standing Committee that was formed earlier this year.  Dupuis attended the first meeting in Tacoma, Washington, in April.  Many of the same issues being addressed by the PS 1 Standing Committee are being considered by the PS 2 Standing Committee.  For more information about these particular meetings or the issues that were discussed at each, please contact:

TECO Hosts Green Building Seminar
TECO hosted 25 builders and designers at a Green Building Seminar in Madison, Wisconsin, on May 13.  Robin Pharo of Healthy Homes, a green building consultant and member of the expert team that developed the NAHB Green Building Guidelines, was the primary speaker during the day-long seminar.  Ms. Pharo offered information and insight about eco-friendly building and answered questions as to what 'green' is and what 'green' isn't.  She helped attendees understand that different green goals need to be set for each project and are dependent on customer or builder circumstances.

Contact Jed Hannemann, TECO's Green Building Specialist, for more information or for assistance with hosting your own green building seminar.  jed.hannemann@tecotested.com
Save The Dates
As we did in 2008, TECO will host its Industry Advisory Council meeting for clients and invited guests in conjunction with the Panel & Engineered Lumber International Conference & EXPO (PELICE) in Atlanta in February 2010.  PELICE-2008 attracted 500+ industry participants, and another terrific conference and expo is in the works.  TECO is a Gold Sponsor of PELICE-2010, a conference open to everyone in the forest products industry.  We look forward to seeing you there.
