New Shops and Expanded Options
Lincoln Square is New York City's premier cosmopolitan neighborhood and our area's retailers and restaurants are always looking for ways to stay current. Take for example Gracious Home at Broadway and 67th Street... this elegant store now carries high quality items in its newly expanded Baby & Kids department, and the new Gracious Paws section has plenty of gifts for everyone's favorite four legged friends.

The Gap, a few feet away at 1992 Broadway, just had a total facelift... in time to debut its spring collection with outfits for the whole family and in preparation for a new collection designed by Diane von Furstenberg.

This week, Lincoln Square also became home to an Arthur Murray Manhattan Dance Center. This new studio brings ballroom dancing back to the 4th floor of 1845 Broadway between 60th & 61st Streets ... just in time as ABC's hit series, Dancing with the Stars, returns to the prime time line-up!

At Time Warner Center, London-based L.K. Bennett, an international, accessible luxury brand that reflects its unmistakable British heritage, and fashion mogul Chris Burch's C. Wonder, which promises to offer "an entirely new retail experience," will take center stage in 2012 as they open their doors at Columbus Circle later this year.

Plus, we just learned about a couple of great things happening at Bouchon Bakery on the 3rd floor of Time Warner Center.  This March, the bakery will hold an evening bake sale - any 3 items for $10.00, Monday - Saturday, 8:00pm to 9:00pm and Sunday, 6:00pm - 7:00pm.  The French-inspired eatery also launched a call-ahead and pick-up service, Monday - Friday, 11:30am to 2:00pm. Give it a try and call them at 212.823.9357 to order your lunch and they'll have it ready to go when you arrive.

Kudos to BID Businesses
The Best of Lincoln Square
Each year, New York magazine rates the best of New York. And, as usual, several Lincoln Square businesses were rated the best of 2012. Kudos to Boulud Sud, Lincoln Ristorante, Lincoln Terrace Cleaners, and Jazz at Lincoln Center's WeBop.

Congratulations are also in order for Boulud Sud's Ghaya Oliveira, Telepan's Bill Telepan, MASA's Masa Takayama, and Picholine on their 2012 James Beard Award nominations.

Good luck! www.jamesbeard.org

Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola
After Hours at
Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola
The Jazz Club With a View
There's nothing more iconic in New York than extraordinary views and the views from Jazz at Lincoln Center are no exception; especially After Hours at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola on the 5th floor of Time Warner Center.

This March, Dizzy's Club is, as usual, in full swing with performances featuring some of the most talented jazz musicians of our time, including The Earth String Band and the Jed Levy Quartet performing for free (seating is first come, first served; no tickets required) at 12:30pm and 2:30pm, respectively, as part of Jazz's Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad program on Saturday, March 10.  But, the Jazz club with a view really heats up after hours at its late night sets every Tuesday - Thursday at 11:00pm and Friday - Saturday at 11:30pm or 12:45am.  This month Jazz will feature the Marianne Solivan Quartet, John Benitez Group, Juilliard Jazz Ensemble, and the Adison Evans Quintet: The Music of Pepper Adams & Donald Byrd... after hours!

Don't miss out on The Hot Fives Special: $5 Cover, $5 Menu and $5 Drink Specials every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at these late night sets. You're not going to find a better deal than this in New York City!  For reservations or more information call 212.258.9595 or 9795 or CLICK HERE.

NYC Retail Survey
New Business Acceleration Team (NBAT)

Do you own a retail business in New York City? Do you operate a storefront service business, such as a dry cleaner, barber shop, or salon? Please fill out the NYC Retail Survey by Monday, March 12, 2012 to help NYC make it easier to open a retail business.

The NYC Retail Survey is being conducted by the New Business Acceleration Team (NBAT), which was created in 2010 by the New York City Council, Mayor Bloomberg and the Department of Small Business Services to help small businesses navigate city requirements, save money and open their doors more quickly and easily.  Starting as a pilot program focusing on the restaurant sectors, NBAT has helped over 600 restaurants open 75 days earlier, on average.

Now, the City is seeking to build on the success of this initiative by expanding NBAT's services to the City's retail industry and needs your input.

Dr. Mark Melrose (l) and Dr. Neal Shipley (r)
Urgent Care Manhattan
Walk-in Medical Care
Urgent Care Manhattan on Amsterdam Avenue at 69th Street would like to let its neighbors on the Upper West Side know that the office is now fully participating in CIGNA, HIP and GHI health insurance plans. Urgent Care Manhattan will accept these eligible benefit plans plus any required co-pay as payment for your immediate healthcare needs.

Walk-in medical care has never been easier in NYC!  These board certified emergency physicians provide evaluation and treatment for a wide range of minor emergencies - and they do it without the long wait or high cost of a visit to a hospital emergency room. Dr. Mark Melrose and Dr. Neal Shipley have over 40 years of combined clinical and leadership experience in some of the area's finest emergency departments. With ER's overflowing, and patients finding it ever more challenging to find a doctor when they need one, Urgent Care Manhattan was opened  to provide personal attention at your convenience.

Urgent Care Manhattan also expects to participate in EMPIRE/BLUE CROSS, AETNA, OXFORD and UNITED sometime in the near future.

New Tower Transmits WBGO Jazz
WBGO Jazz 88.3FM
This winter, WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM, the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area's only full-time jazz station, flipped the switch on a new transmitter and antenna system atop 4 Times Square in Manhattan.  WBGO is now better positioned to spread jazz music and the love of this original American art form.  The new transmitter is located at a height of 834 feet, almost doubling the height of the previous system in New Jersey.  WBGO's broadcast studios, production facility, and administrative offices-its nerve center-remain in Newark.

WBGO has been increasing its visibility over the past several years with high-profile partnerships with New York and New Jersey-based arts and entertainment organizations, including many on the Upper West Side, such as our very own Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra's season at Symphony Space, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola and Lincoln Center Out of Doors.

Dangerous Crossing at 60th Street and Broadway
Major Upper West Side Projects

The Lincoln Square BID monitors major issues and initiatives that affect our district - the gateway to the Upper West Side.

City Planning's Proposed Rezoning

Recently the Department of City Planning issued a proposal to rezone 77 blocks on the Upper West Side, north of our district, limiting the frontage size and type of retail establishments and residential lobbies on Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue, and limiting the size of residential lobbies and type of retail north of our district on Broadway.  Although the proposal does not affect our district, we decided to voice our opposition to this proposal because of its precedent setting nature, the possibility that it could be recommended for other neighborhoods including ours, and its impact on retailers and property owners.

We believe that this proposal will have many unintended consequences and will not achieve the stated goal of retaining the local character of a community and protecting small businesses. To learn more about the proposal, click here: City Planning's Proposed Retail Streets Rezoning. To read our full statement and some of the commentary in the press, CLICK HERE.

DOT's West Side Transportation Study

Another very important issue to our community is one that we are actively following.  The New York City Department of Transportation's (DOT) West Side Transportation Study has been analyzing the projected future conditions (2018) of the Upper West SideRecently DOT has released a series of recommendations and proposals including signal timing changes, parking regulation changes, bike sharing and bike parking locations, roadway striping, sidewalk extensions, and other geometric changes to the streets.  We will be meeting with DOT to review the recommendations and if appropriate, suggest possible alternative recommendations.  Our objective is to ensure that our businesses are not negatively impacted, that pedestrian safety is enhanced, and that our elegant streetscape is not diminished in any way.  To see the details of the recommendations, visit www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/about/westside.shtml and look at Technical Memorandum #2.

Third Water Tunnel & West 61st Street

A major project that is taking place along our western boundary of Amsterdam Avenue is the construction of the Third Water Tunnel as well as the Fordham University construction and residential development on and around 61st Street.  The Third Water Tunnel construction will have a major impact on streets and avenues in Lincoln Square for a number of years.
