Dear Friends,

The district has awarded two more Ablaze! Mission Outpost Grants to further the strategy of New Starts...New Believers. One in particular has exciting potential to multiply new Hispanic mission sites across the district. Read about the grants below. Then, take note of a couple more Haiti benefit events as well as a workshop on supporting military families and a fun concert in Belvidere this weekend.

New Ablaze! Grants Move People from Training to the Mission Field

How do you determine which outreach plan will or will not get funding from the district - when all show such promise for  reaching new people in the community with the love of Jesus Christ? That's the tough question the district is facing twice each year when it considers applications for Ablaze! Mission Outpost Grants.

This latest round of grants, awarded January 25, proved to be no exception as evaluators reviewed eight projects that would put flesh on the district strategy of New Starts...New Believers.

Two were ultimately approved for funding by the Board of Directors; one will provide next year's vicar to lead outreach at Risen Savior Mission in Winnebago (a position shared with St. John, Pecatonica). Risen Savior was started several years ago in this small town, west of Rockford, and is utilizing vicars trained for mission work at the Synod's seminaries to further their outreach into the community.

The other grant award will fund start-up costs for new Hispanic ministry sites utilizing graduates of the School for Missionaries at Iglesia Luterana San Pablo, Aurora. This training school (photo above) expects to have 10 students ready to launch into ministry this year. Each of them could work at far-flung district congregations to connect with Spanish speaking people in the community and lead Bible studies as multi-site extensions of San Pablo. The Ablaze! grant will help fund about three of the start-ups. Read about one student, Omar de Leon, and how you can help the school

You can follow the progress of New Starts...New Believers at the district's People Ablaze! website.
How to Support the Military

Immanuel Lutheran Church in East Dundee invites congregations to learn how to start a ministry for military support on Saturday, March 27, 9 a.m. to noon at the church, 310 E. Main Street (on the corner of Hwy. 72 and Van Buren). Chaplain Michael P. Moreno, USNR (in photo), will explain how Operation Barnabas in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod is supporting service members through "Ministry-by-Mail" and ways congregations can support both active and retired personnel and their families who live locally. If you wish to attend the presentation, please call the church office at 847-428-4477. A lunch will follow. There is no fee to attend. You can learn more about Synod's military outreach at the website, operationbarnabas.org.
