Cari Amici di Sotto Sopra,

We didn't send out a newsletter in August because Sotto Sopra was super busy organizing Restaurant Week.It was the most successful Restaurant Week in our history. We've extended lunch and dinner dining deals through Sunday, September 4th in honor of Baltimore's inaugural Grand Prix Race. Remember, we are not in the race's way and you can reach us through St Paul or Cathedral/Maryland Avenue (south) and Mulberry or Franklin (east or west) and there is always free valet parking.

We're back; the whole family is back from Italy! Our trip to Italy was beyond memorable! Puglia is a fantastic region. We ate in grottas, under olive trees, and by the sea. Ostuni, Gallipoli, Alberobello, Santa Maria di Leuca, and Biscelie, are the cities we liked the most.

We made friends, ate a ton of great food, mainly fish; crudos and sea urchins. The beauty is that after the unbelievable amount of food I ate, when I returned I weighed 2 pounds less! Go figure. Great food and the right environment can make a difference.

One thing I realized is that the quality of the seafood and vegetables I ate in Italy is way impossible to find here. In my professional life I never tasted fish so fresh and intense. If you want to experience pure perfection in seafood quality I urge you to make Puglia a destination sometime in your life. You will thank me!

If you weren't sure we were back the fact that the earth moved, the sky sent sheets of rain and the winds blew - you should have said I bet Riccardo, Amelia and Monika are home. Seriously, we hope that you and your families came out of Hurricane Irene and the earthquake unscathed.

We hope your summer went well and you took the time to relax.

Sotto Sopra will start the Fall menu soon. Figs anyone? I' m glad to be back, cooking again with new inspirations for the new Fall menu.

DINING OUT FOR LIFE
Thursday, September 22

On Thursday, September 22, 2011, thousands of people in the Greater Baltimore Metropolitan Area will be participating in one of the most rewarding dining experiences of the year. Moveable Feast's Dining Out for Life event raises tens of thousands of dollars, thanks to the generosity of community-minded restaurants, sponsors, and those who dine out with their families and friends that day to help our neighbors in need.

By dining at Sotto Sopra Restaurant on Thursday, September 22  we will be donating 20 percent of dinner proceeds that day  to help feed hundreds of men, women, and children right here in our community living with HIV/AIDS, and other life-challenging conditions such as breast cancer.

Remember to Eat.Drink.Sleep.Dream - Italian and know that on this night you are helping many others with their day-to-day living.

CANTALOUPE & HONEYDEW MINTED RIBBONS

Melons are so delicious right now that I thought you might enjoy this simple, no cook recipe that is not only refreshing but has huge eye appeal. Melons that are slightly under ripe works best for this application

Serves 4- 6

½ cantaloupe, peeled, seeded and cut into 1 inch slices

½ honeydew melon, peeled, seeded and cut into 1 inch slices

½ cup, fresh mint that has been washed and dried, set aside a couple whole sprigs for presentation.

3 tablespoons of sugar

2 teaspoons sea salt

Take a vegetable peeler and shave thin ribbons of the fruit from the outer side into a large bowl. Chop the mint all but the reserved whole sprigs and mix with sugar and salt in a small bowl. Toss the mint, sugar, salt mix to fruit ribbons and serve on individual chilled plates with a sprig of whole mint.

AMELIA'S RANT

When mama and papa said to me, you're going to Italy I was so happy.

Mama and I met up with Papa in Italy, we had been to Poland first. As you can tell from the snap, I was still happy, unsuspecting.

I was having a good time, and then they told me now that I was 18 months old I will have to earn my keep.  You can see how my expression has started to change.

Papa said in his family the children start working early and I was no different. I was out early in the morning plowing the fields.

And if that wasn't enough, I had to pick the tomatoes

Well the party is over, I'm back in the states and I'm expected to do clean up at the restaurant.  Luckily I'm too short to reach the sink to wash dishes but I have to sweep the restaurant twice a day. Can you say child slavery?  If I knew this was going to happen I would have stayed in Poland.

 I'm working hard in pink!

Amelia

FREE THINGS TO DO IN FLORENCE

Florence can be expensive when you are heading to every museum and decorated church in the city. But there are many things to do that won't cost you a euro to see, and finding them is easy once you know where to look.

Piazzale Michelangelo, for example, offers a panoramic viewpoint of the city. There are many tour groups and buses that park there to allow tourists a few minutes to take pictures of the city from above. But you should take the long walk up  from San Niccolo to the top where you can see the city and surrounding areas at different levels while you stop to rest. You are on vacation, after all, so take your time walking up the steps and steep walkways. Bring your camera so you can capture the most glorious views of the Florence. MAKING VIRTUAL TORTELLINI

The game, the Tortellini X-perience recently made its debut in Bologna, Italy.  The multi-media  virtual reality game Tortellini X-perience was designed by Marco Roccetti, a professor of computer science at the University of Bologna for the World Expo in Shanghai last fall.

Roccetti had two goals in mind, the first was preservation, preservation of the culinary heritage of Bologna and the second goal was taking a very hard task, which tortellini is and making it a game.  Using software and a 10 year old webcam, he created a console free game

HOW NOT TO GET RIPED OFF EATING IN ITALY

We've heard story upon story of tourists being ripped off at cafes or restaurants in Italy. We've even experienced it ourselves. And let us tell you: Unfortunately, nothing makes you leave even a great meal with a sour taste in your mouth like knowing you paid way too much for that tiny little coffee (8 euros? You must be kidding!)... or wondering if you did (when the waiter pointedly said "Service is not included," were you really supposed to leave that 20% tip?).

These kinds of experiences can bring your whole trip to Italy down. And many tourists think that they're just part of the deal when it comes to traveling in another country. Read the full story at Walks of Italy.
