Volunteers working on community investment teams

United Way is focused on Basic Needs, Income, Health and Education.  These are the building blocks that make our community a great place to live and work.

In the fall of each year, individuals volunteer to raise funds to support the annual campaign.  In the spring of the following year, volunteers determine how those dollars are invested in our community.  A total of 95 individuals are serving as volunteers in this year's review process, either as Financial Review or Community Investment volunteers.  A team of volunteers is responsible for reviewing the financials for each applying agency.  Ten additional teams of volunteers are responsible for reviewing written applications and conducting site visits for each program requesting funds.

During the review process, volunteers evaluate programs using three key criteria:

  • Needs: Is the program meeting a need in the community?
  • Results: Is this program achieving results (not just providing a service) to the target population?
  • Stewardship: Is the organization a good steward of United Way funds? Are the funds needed and managed effectively?

The volunteer review process will conclude May 19 when funding recommendations are presented to the United Way Board of Directors.  United Way provides funding on a July 1 - June 30 fiscal year.  The funding available during this year's review process is the result of the 2010 campaign.

Thank you to all volunteers who give of their time, talents and treasures to support United Way.  This fiscal year, United Way has had a record number of Loaned Executives and Community Investment volunteers. Serving as a volunteer in the campaign and the community investment process are just two of the many ways people in our community Live United.

Volunteer Spotlight
Thomas AheThis month we are highlighting volunteer Thomas Ahr, who joined the volunteer center in 2008. "I wanted to give back, so I searched online for volunteer opportunities and found the United Way Volunteer Center. The website provided invaluable information about volunteering."  Tom has a very strong interest in helping the homeless, so he adjusted his work schedule so he can volunteer weekly with Open Door's Showering Program for the Homeless and Homeless Resource Network.  He has also spent time volunteering with Feeding the Valley Food Bank.  Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)  program, Tom became an IRS certified volunteer working with the homeless and is a team volunteer for the 2011 Community Investment process.  Tom says volunteering "is very rewarding for me."
