PRESIDENT'S REPORT from the Conference
LIVIA D. THOMPSON, FTA
"The work we did with measuring success can be applied to NATA as well. How do we make sure that our resources (mostly people and time) are aligned with our vision and mission, and that we are reflecting our members needs and desires? We too have to measure our successes and failures, and the ways in which we have moved our profession forward, supported our members, assisted the Reform Movement and created strong educational opportunities for our colleagues. This doesn't just take the board, it takes all of us being engaged with all of us to make us successful."

NATA CONFERENCE WRAP UP
by Barbara Merson
Energy, energy, energy - you could feel it in the conference rooms, the halls, and all through the Alexandria Westin. Whether it was the buzz in the first timers reception, the congeniality in the hospitality suite, the intense questioning in the education sessions or the just the conversations in the halls, this NATA convention pulsed with the energy created by the exchange of ideas.
This conference was shorter in than those in the past, but it gained in intensity what it lost in time duration. From the 6:30 am Zumba class to the late night sessions in the hotel bar, everyone was busy learning, understanding, and connecting with colleagues. It was wonderful to see colleagues from past conferences and to meet the first timers. The buddy program was particularly successful this year -- everyone felt welcomed and appreciated.
This conference is very important to all of us, particularly at a time when we are all facing major challenges in our jobs. The difficult economy is accelerating the debate about synagogue membership and dues. The generational model is changing, with baby boomers, gen X, and millenials often in conflict over the role of the synagogue. While there are no definitive answers, the NATA conference offered the tools, venues, and discussion partners to start the thought process of how to deal with all of this in the coming year.
And the energy didn't end with the convention. It was wonderful to see so many NATA colleagues at the Biennial and to be able to continue some of the discussions we had started at NATA. As we move into the new year, let's try to keep the buzz going by reaching beyond the routine , trying out some of the things we learned, and above all, staying in touch!

Closing Banquet / Honoring Our Long Timers
Coming much too so on after the start of this terrific Conference, our closing banquet was full of laughs. With the help of videos produced by their congregations, we roasted three NATA members: Mark Jacobson of The Temple in Atlanta, soon to celebrate his 35th anniversary as executive director, and we said goodbyes to two retiring members: Nancy Schneider, who has been executive director of Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York City for 19 years and Debbie Coutant, executive director of Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills, California, after 11 years in the field. We coaxed former NATA President Steve Breuer out of retirement to emcee and shared laughs as we watched the videos. You can, too:

Thanks also to Ed Alpert, Sydney Baer, Michael Garland, Bekki Harris Kaplan and Robin Rubin for an evening of fun and camaraderie.
Watch this space as we pay tribute to others who are retiring from the field including Marc Swatez and Randi Jaffe.
