A Note from NATA President -

Ed Alpert

It is safe to say that the last three years have been a time of great turmoil and upheaval for our synagogues and the Reform movement as a whole.  I am well aware of the incredible challenges the economic crisis has placed on all of us.  However, in so many meetings and conversations I have had over the past couple of years, the commitment by Executive Directors, synagogue leaders and our national movement to get through the crisis has been extraordinary.  While there has been obvious hurt, pain and sacrifice, our foundation remains strong and the future of the Reform movement is bright and positive.

MEMBERSHIP -  Recruitment, Integration and Retention

It is important that our Temple leaders ensure our congregation is welcoming and attractive to the unaffiliated, as well as cultivate increased engagement and retention among our current members.

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) has done an amazing job in providing resources and tools for membership recruitment, integration and retention.

Please visit the URJ website.

The Alban Institute - a Helpful Resource

AlbanThe Alban Institute is an independent center of learning and leadership development with a focus on congregations. Located in greater Washington, D.C., Alban is a not-for-profit, membership organization that develops and shares knowledge through consulting, publishing, research, and education programs.

While primarily church-focused, the Alban Institute's Newsletter and Congregational Resource Guide  are worth a look.  The Alban Bookstore and the Alban Institute can also provide consultants on many aspects of our work and some of our colleagues can provide references on consultants they've used - feel free to ask for details on NATA-Net.

MUM - Maintenance of Union Membership

Submitted by Carole Goldberg, URJ

URJ ImageIt is spring, that wonderful time of year when many of our congregations are working through their budget process for next year. The Union for Reform Judaism is also approaching the end of the budget process for FY 2011. At the June Board meeting, the URJ Board of Trustees will review and vote on the adoption of the budget approved by the Budget Committee on April 18.

A major portion of the revenue side of the Union budget consists of the MUM obligations that our member congregations send to the Union. It is my responsibility, along with my lay leaders, to make the projection of what the MUM collections will be in the coming year. The current economic environment has added challenges to that responsibility, just as your task of projecting the revenues for your congregation is challenging for you. Some of our newer colleagues may be wondering about MUM. For them, and to refresh everyone else on some of the more recent changes to the Proportional Dues Program, I would like to briefly share a few basics with you.

We have many NATA members contribute to the NATA E-Exchange each month.  In the first issue, Sandy Silverstein prepared the NATA-Net Archive article.  We have also had articles from Blair Brown on Budgeting; Dale Glasser on URJ matters and services; and Jeff Manis on Brit Avodah.

We are fortunate to have such a talented group of members.  Their articles are timely and informative, and we thank them for sharing their wisdom in the NATA E-Exchange!

Do you have something to contribute?  Please contact Bekki Kaplan and share with us a topic that is of interest to you.
