A Board Member You Should Know...
What better way to launch E-Exchange than to get to know our own

NATA President,
Ed Alpert
Ed Ilene

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT ED ALPERT

We all know Ed Alpert as the President of NATA , the Executive Director of Am Shalom in Glencoe, Illinois and he previously served on the Reform Pension Board and the Hebrew Union College - Cincinnati Board of Overseers. However, did you know:

1. In Grammar School Ed was an accomplished equestrian. He rode both English and Western saddle and won several competitions in his age group.
Welcome to the first issue of NATA E-Exchange! This monthly resource will not only serve as a great educational resource for each of us, but it will provide you with useful and timely tools and ideas to contemplate as you provide your own voice within your congregation.  This newsletter will also serve as a wonderful way to stay connected with your colleagues throughout the world and learn the latest news about and from NATA.

As this is created by our peers, however, it is only as great as the ideas that you provide.  Please take a moment as you read this newsletter and share with us interesting topics or questions that you would like considered for future issues.  We have created an online survey to make your feedback easy and quick - see the link on the left!  And, while you are thinking... help us give this newsletter a name!  We would love to hear your suggestions - winners will win a prize at our Portland Conference in October.  Send your thoughts to Bekki Kaplan.

Most importantly, read on and welcome!  May this help each of us go from strength to strength.

A Note from NATA President, Ed Alpert

Ed HeadshotAs written in the NATA Mission Statement, the top priority for the organization is meeting the needs of its members (the community.) In the middle of my third and final year as NATA President, I can say with great confidence that all of the decisions made by your leadership have been done with this priority in mind. You are truly valued as a member of NATA and please know how much your affiliation is appreciated. Over the last few years, so many of you have shared with me your thoughts about initiatives NATA should undertake to better serve its members. I know each one has been carefully analyzed, discussed and in most cases implemented. I have never been prouder when in 2009 your leadership approved and granted (47) full scholarships to attend the NATA Conference in Toronto. As per the above saying, there is simply no doubt in my mind that the Officers and Board of NATA occupy themselves with trying to meet your needs.

BUDGETING - What? Me Worry?
Budgeting
Hakuna matata - yes, I have children - but they're in college now - so why the phrase?  Translated from Swahili - No Worries - about what?  The economy hasn't completely bounced back.  Many congregants are in need.  I'm already exhausted and the High Holy Days are still months away.  I could go on.

But for most of you - you are either entering or are deep into the dreaded budget season.  Hakuna matata.  No, we won't do your budget for you - but hopefully the following tid-bits, thoughts and links may lessen your worries.

First stop - The Temple Management Manual - Chapter 12.  Lots of good stuff.  Remember - 'The budget reflects the priorities of congregations in their efforts to create spiritually fulfilling communities, provide positive worship experiences, and respond to family and life-cycle needs.'  And 'A budget is a financial blueprint of the programs and aspirations of the congregation.  It is a planning tool for anticipating expense and income and determining how to allocate them.  Synagogue vision, goals, and mission should determine the budget, and the budget should be responsive to change.'

HUMAN RESOURCES - Jewish Style

ToolboxIn our own work, we are always trying to find ways in which to connect Judaism in what we do.  At Temple Israel in Memphis a Brit Avodah was created to help guide conversations surrounding personnel issues.  The covenant is part of every staff member's job description, and the expectation is for each member of the staff, regardless of the hierarchy, to follow and reflect Jewish values at all times.   And when disagreements arise or situations are created that involve intervention, the Brit Avodah is reviewed with the staff member and discussion focuses on what can be done in the future to avoid conflict.

Check out their example, and if you have a Brit Avodah that you wish to share with NATA, send it to the NATA office and we will post.
