Reading Recommendations from the Cottage Shelves
I'm starting off my summer with one of my guilty pleasures, the latest Agent Pendergast novel by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston- Fever Dream. I love this series- sometimes a bit sci-fi, always tangled, unpredictable plots, and of course, the quirky uber-intelligent character of Agent Pendergast. I love 'em. Start with book one- Relic and you'll be hooked for the summer- ten books to date! Chris is enjoying a new author that his dad, Jim, introduced him to- Jo Nesbo, a Norwegian author whose series featuring Oslo based detective Harry Hole has been pronounced 'psychologically rich and complexly plotted'. The new Stieg Larsson? Maybe...
obx houseTONS of quintessential beach reads out this summer- all in trade paper- there's Jane Green's Dune Road, Nancy Thayer's Moon Shell Beach, Patti Callahan Henry's Driftwood Summer and The Art of Keeping Secrets, That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo, Summer Island by Kristin Hannah, Summer House by Nancy Thayer, Patricia DeLois' Bufflehead Sisters, Heidi Jon Schmidt's The House on Oyster Creek and Martha Moody's Sometimes Mine. Whew! I said there was a ton!
The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, Stieg Larsson's final book, is selling briskly- and I've been getting good feedback about it; just out this week is Justin Cronin's much hyped The Passage- it started selling as soon as I unpacked it. Also a probable hot seller at Duck's Cottage is the newly released The Outer Banks House by Diann Ducharme which takes place in Nags Head just after the Civil War. Historical fiction set on the OBX- does it get any better than that? Diann will be here for a book signing in August!
This month the Duck's Cottage Reading Group is digesting The Lost City of Z by David Grann- I'm looking forward to this good dose of travel/adventure to start the summer off. Other local book groups are readig Jeanette Walls' The Glass Castle, John Hart's The Last Child and Lesley Kagen's Whistling in the Dark. passage
A fun beach read by some local authors is Feng Shui Love by Joni Davis and Lisa Hyatt. Lily Chamberlayne lands in New York at her best friend Brook's apartment after discovering her high-powered husband has been philandering with his assistant. Her wacky mother shows up and insists that until Lily and Brook's feng shui gets right true harmony will continue to elude them. If you don't even know where to find your love corner, don't worry- this hilarious book will set you straight and provide an easy afternoon read by the pool or at the beach. Lisa & Joni will be at Duck's Cottage in July for a book signing- more details next month!

oliverI've saved the best for last! This month's MUST READ is a new young adult title called Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. This was the number one Spring Kid's Pick by Indiebound and the more I read about it, the more I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I read it last weekend and LOVED it. Will probably read it again and can't wait until Sarah is a little older so I can give it to her. Samantha Kingston is a popular senior with the right boyfriend, three perfect best friends, the best table at lunch, etc. The book starts with the morning of Cupid Day (aka the day when all the popular girls at Thomas Jefferson High get tons of roses and the outcasts get none), basically another normal day in Samantha's perfect life- a day which ends with a terrible car accident. And then Samantha wakes up. And its Cupid's Day.. again. And the next day, and the next. Pretty soon Samantha begins to discover that the little actions by her crowd can have serious reactions in people's lives and that the things they value aren't necessarily the things one should hold precious. This was a heartbreaking yet uplifting book and I can't stop raving about it!
