March Twoten
TGIM!
  ( Thank Goodness It's March! )
"I made it through the rain (and wind and snow)
 I kept my world protected.
I made it through the rain
(or your 4 letter word of choice)
and found myself respected by the others who
got rained on too and made it through"
Thanks Barry.

Reading Recommendations from the Cottage Shelves

march

Hasn't been a big month for pleasure reading. I'm currently enmeshed in Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, Paco Underhill's instant late-nineties business classic, hoping to pick up some fresh ideas to use in the store. Also was fascinated by a Self magazine excerpt so went out and bought The Nine Rooms of Happiness by Self editor Lucy Danziger and Catherine Birndorf, M.D. Tailored towards women, this book promises to put an end to negi-speak and also hits on 'Loving Yourself, Finding Your Purpose and Getting Over Life's Little Imperfections'.. all that for only $24.95? Sounds cheaper than therapy! (jk, Kathleen.)

Am struggling with Alice Munro's prize winning story collection, Too Much Happiness. Not loving it. On other nightstands in my household- Chris is into Rick Riordan's The Sea of Monsters from the Lightning Thief series, Sarah just finished David Stahler's True Sight which is set on Harmony Station, a planet colonized by blind people who have their offspring genetically engineered to also be sightless. And then one day 13 year old Jacob can see and discovers what really surrounds him both in the landscape and in the people. Sarah is also totally psyched for next week's release of Fang, the latest installment in James Patterson's Maximum Ride series. We were all bummed that the final book in Suzanne Collin's YA Hunger Games series is not due til August. Charlie's is re-reading To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee's classic, for English.

Jim recently recommended the novel The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent, which tells the story of Sarah, the daughter of one of the first women accused, tried and hung during the Salem Witch Trials. Current local book group picks include Sue Monk Kidd's Traveling with Pomegranates, Elizabeth Strout's Olive Kitteredge, Cathy Lamb's Henry's Sisters and Mary Todd Lincoln by Jean Baker.

Oprah: A Biography is due out April 13 from Kitty Kelley and seems to be the first of the big Spring releases. The next upcoming months are a big time in publishing so look for lots of new titles headed your way soon! (And don't forget to come see us if you get to Duck over Easter! We can't wait to see you!)

Also- don't forget to fan us on Facebook and become the recipient of almost daily book suggestions, Duck news and whatever else strikes our fancy! We just hit 500 fans! It's a great way to keep in touch when you can't be in Duck!

Jamie's Book Club
 the March Selection
vergheseI am very excited about this month's selection for Jamie's Book Club. I loved this title in hardback (and passed the advance copy around freely) and as soon as I found out the paperback release date I knew I had to pick it. This month members will receive Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese, an epic novel with extraordinary characters, unusual settings and a hard to put down story. Twin brothers Marion and Shiva Sone are born to a nun in a mission hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Orphans at birth, they are raised by a tag team of Indian immigrant doctors and nurses who staff the Missing Hospital and keep it running despite the volatile rumblings of revolution in the country. Despite their strong 'twin' connection, Marion and Shiva's personalities often collide and when both are beckoned by the familiar world of medicine they embark on very different paths.

This is Vegehse's first novel. An earlier memoir, My Own Country, was a 2009 Duck's Cottage Reading Group selection and our group as a whole would definitely recommend reading it. He has a wonderful writing style, a true knack for plot and an ability to surprise even the most seasoned reader.
Change a life. Change your own.
Continuing Education Seminars for Literacy Tutors

dare literacyIn an effort to provide continuing education to trained literacy tutors, the Dare Literacy Council will conduct several in-service seminars throughout the year for literacy tutors. Seminars are open to all literacy tutors, whether trained by the DLC or not. The Dare Literacy Council would like to hear from its tutors about subjects they would like to see covered in future seminars. All tutors are asked to pre-register by calling or emailing the DLC.

An in-service seminar is scheduled for Saturday, March 27 from 1:00 to 2:30 pm at St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head. The March seminar is free to all DLC-trained tutors, but there is a $10 fee for tutors not trained by the DLC or currently working as a DLC tutor.

Contact the Dare Literacy Council at (252) 216-7773 or dareliteracy@gmail.com to register or for further information

As Winter 2010 comes to a close
here's another suitable ode from the man, the myth, the machine:
Looks like we made It!
Let's hope Mother Nature got the memo!
