Whew! I just finished the 1,014 page volume referred to by my water aerobics ladies as Book Without End (affectionately, I'm sure) but whose published title is really World Without End (Ken Follett's follow up to Pillars of the Earth). I'm a glutton for anglophile history so despite its length I enjoyed it but do wonder if it wouldn't have been a bit more interesting if Follett wasn't so persistent in allowing his reader to rest in the comfort of knowing he's going to make sure all the bad guys get their comeuppances and all the good folk will one day be rewarded. Anyhoo... if you have a free month or two this winter, try it.
Two thumbs up from our book club for The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox (Maggie O'Farrell). Interesting story about a young woman in Edinburgh who discovers she has a great aunt who is about to be released from the mental hospital she's resided in for 60 years. Blended of three voices, this slim novel has some surprising plot twists and poses some personal ethics questions in the vein of The Memory Keeper's Daughter.
I'd never read Chuck Palahniuk before and maybe Snuff wasn't the one to start with. This is a hard-core little number and as I do try to keep this newsletter PG-13, I won't go into too much detail but suffice it to say it revolves around an aging porn queen (and king), the child they conceived together but gave up for adoption, and porn. Lots and lots of it. In fact, I wonder if one of Palahniuk's intents isn't to immunize the reader to the depths of depravities he sinks to. Be forewarned.
Just out in paperback and selling very well is Ann Patchett's latest novel, Run. Also, Kathleen Flinn's The Sharper Your Knife the Less You Cry which I loved but remember I always like to cook vicariously through others; I also highly recommend Songs Without Words (Ann Packer). How Starbucks Saved My Life- a so-so memoir by Michael Gates Gill. I still can't believe Tom Hanks thought it was worth scooping up the movie rights but maybe he can make something more out of it. Laura Cortez recommends The Friday Night Knitting Club and liked it so much she has taken up needles. Lots of requests this summer for Emily Giffin titles- Something Borrowed, Something Blue and Baby Proof.
I ran out of books while my family was here so picked up one my mom had just finished, Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand. A good beach chair read with a little more meat than the average beach book. I liked the story of three women who head off to Nantucket for a summer to both escape their pasts and reenvision their futures. It has been selling by the handfuls along with another Hilderbrand novel, The Beach Club. Upcoming books to movies- Miracle at St. Anna based on James McBride's novel of the Buffalo Soldiers of World War II; Chuck Palahniuk's Choke (looks every bit as bizarre as Snuff) and of course, the locally filmed Nights in Rodanthe (Nicholas Sparks) starring Richard Gere, Diane Lane, a beautiful Hatteras Island backdrop and lots of OBX extras. Once Labor Day came and went I figured it was time to take down the back wall display of Summer Reading Lists. As 2008-2009 reading lists for local book clubs started coming in a new display naturally fell into place! On the back wall this Fall- Local Book Club Picks, featuring not only Duck's Cottage Reading Group titles, but those from a variety of other OBX book clubs as well spanning a wide range of subjects and authors; I'll share some of these titles with you next month.
I enjoyed a lovely late-August lunch at Aqua S. with The Book Reporter's Carol Fitzgerald. Carol has her ear to the proverbial ground in the publishing world and we were both lamenting the dearth of books the publishing world insists upon laying at our feet. So much new material was unveiled this year that neither of us could really put a finger on ' THE' book of Summer 2008.. no Da Vinci Code, no Lovely Bones, there's just too much out there and more arriving every day as Fall, another big publishing season, gets into full swing. As the old adage goes- So Many Books, So Little Time.. but don't think we won't die trying!

Tasty Tidbits from the Town of Duck |
| Excerpts from Madame de Canard's most recent musings in the Fall 2008 North Beach Sun.
Mon dieu! Is summer over already? This thought makes Madame very, very- how do you say- melancholy. Before officially saying Adieu to the Summer of '08, Madame would like to make one mention: to Mirek Dabrowski and the entire guard staff of Duck Surf Rescue- Bravo! Job well done! Merrick and his team put in many, many hours of hard, hot work this summer and performed more than a few heroic saves. For giving us peace of mind during a day at the beach, Merci Beaucoup.
It was a beautiful summer- gorgeous weather, a fantastic Fourth of July Parade, lots of wonderful Town Park activities to enjoy with visitors from afar, friends from down the street and even Ms. Phyllis!.. But now we move on to Fall! Madame is very much looking forward to this year's Jazz Festival at the Town of Duck Park. Join moi on the Green Sunday, October 12, 2008. The music kicks off at 11 am and won't stop until dusk! The line-up includes Gerald Veasley, The Fuzz Band, Jackie Scott & The Housewreckers, Connected and the First Flight Jazzhawks. The Festival is held rain or shine and don't forget blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets! The popular- and free- Tai Chi classes held at the Park at 7:30 am, Tuesday mornings, will continue through October so it is still not too late to take advantage of this offering! Madame and her children have a new addiction to confess.. Baldie's Burgers & Ice Cream has been an all too frequent stop for us this summer. Ooo la la, the burgers (try Madame's favorite with lettuce, pickle and mayo), the hand cut French fries, their number is programmed into moi's cell phone! (Baldie's is located in downtown Duck next to Wee Winks and across from Kitty Hawk Kites. True blue take-out but they do have a few picnic tables.) A memorable dinner was also had this summer at Red Sky Café, just across from the Park. Madame is still dreaming about the Escargot Florentine and highly recommends pretty much everything else on the menu. Monsieur Wes and Madame Cindy continue to maintain high standards of quality and service that result in a delightful epicurean experience.
Madame spent more than a few hours this summer beside the pool at Duck Woods Country Club. Duck Woods is the only 'true' Country Club on the Outer Banks with golf, tennis, pool, fitness and dining amenities for members to partake of. Mssr Patrick O'Keefe is doing a wonderful job as General Manager and is more than happy to talk with any prospective new members and offers a personal tour of the Club. (Need moi mention there is a non-resident membership category?)
Felicitations to Jared Smith. Mssr Smith is the new Captain at the Duck Volunteer Fire Department which, while manned primarily by volunteers, is busy enough to now have three paid officers- Chief Donna Black, Assistant Chief Bill Walker and now Captain Jared. It has been a busy summer for the DVFD so please, please- if you see flashing red lights coming up behind you with or without a siren- please move to the side of the road and let these wonderful people get to where their help is needed!
Madame is very concerned about the residents and visitors of Duck who are feeding our local wild animals particularly foxes. It appears that our fox population in some neighborhoods has become so accustomed to daily handouts of cat food- and even McDonald's hamburgers!- that they have lost their natural fear of humans and have become downright nuisances. Their numbers are evidence that the population is thriving and this human interaction is unnatural and dangerous. Please do not feed wild animals! The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has this to say about the matter on their website 'If you are feeding wildlife, you should stop.' Any questions?
Have a delightful Fall! I'll be back in November to share with you Madame du Canard's 2008 Magnifique Must-Have Holiday Gift Giving Guide. Au revoir- or until we meet again! At the Jazz Festival!

From June 1 to November 1 there is one word I try not to utter.. it starts with an H, is a popular New Orleans drink, a team mascot in both Miami and Cape Hatteras and rhymes with 'worry brain'. So far we've dodged the bullets of Gustav, Hanna and Ike but as we enjoy Fall's beautiful weather, still swimmable waters, good fishing and less traffic know that we'll be keeping one eye on The Weather Channel. Enjoy the season wherever this finds you!
