July 2008
blue point
What an interesting summer we've been having... first a June heat wave that made it feel more like mid-August. Then a strong and constant Southwest wind brought in a nice variety of jellyfish and nettles. Once the Evans Road wildfire got started down in the Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refuge the slightest change in wind brought in heavy smoke and even ash fall. The widespread effects of the fire were even visible on satellite images like the one above. As we move into the midst of the season, every day brings less smoke just as every day brings more smiling faces into Duck's Cottage- where we're waiting for you!

Reading Recommendations from the Cottage shelves
The Duck's Cottage Reading Group just selected our next six books and they are Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25 and the Search for the American Dream (Adam Shepard), Four Queens: The Provencal Sisters Who Ruled Europe (Nancy Goldstone), Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression (Mildred Armstrong Kalish), Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind The Veil (Deborah Rodriguez & Kristin Ohlson ), The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox (Maggie O' Farrell), and Moloka'i (Alan Brennert). We are currently reading Eat, Pray, Love which continues to hold a spot on bestseller lists. Our June book was Polly Horvath's young adult novel The Canning Season which received a big thumbs up from our group- read it! It really reminded me of the movie Second Hand Lions albeit takes place in the present day and features a teenage girl sent to live with spinster aunts in a remote section of coastal Maine. Many in our group are going to be looking for more of Horvath's titles, like Everything on a Waffle, The Trolls and more. I ran out of books on a car trip recently so picked up one of Charlie's 2008/2009 Battle of the Books titles, Fever 1793,  a great account of a young girl's experiences in Philadelphia during the Yellow Fever outbreak. There really are a lot of great titles out there on the young adult shelves- don't pass them by!! Stephanie Meyer's YA Twilight series (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse) featuring a pair of star crossed lovers (oh, one is a vampire) has jumped over to adult readers and is a hit with a lot of Duck readers. Clai and Jennifer are counting down the days to the release of the fourth book, Breaking Dawn, on August 2. Just finished Mark Ruhlman's The Soul of  a Chef and liked it as much as his first, The Making of a Chef; next up- The Reach of a Chef! Lauren Weisberger (The Devil Wears Prada) is out with a new book- Chasing Harry Winston, which follows a familiar theme- three friends (getting ready to hit 30), living fairly fabulous lives in NYC and working their way through relationship hits and misses. A good beach read as is Jane Green's newest novel, The Beach House.. her last book, Second Chance is just out in paper and selling briskly as is Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach (remember me raving about this?)... another Staff Summer Reading List, this time from Piper (rising Appalachian State Junior and daughter of Duck Police Chief Phillip Ferguson): Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician (Daniel Wallace), Water for Elephants (Sara Gruen), Son of a Witch (Gregory Maguire), Never Have Your Dog Stuffed (Alan Alda), Good Omens (Neil Gaiman) and The Perks of Being A Wallflower (Stephen Chbosky)... how are you doing on YOUR summer reading list?

Now known as IndieBound, the program stresses the fact that 'independence is a virtue' and strives to differentiate between independent bookstores and the chains... one tagline is 'Doing our part to make America interesting'... of course, what did I just overhear a customer say? 'Oh, I can get that at Sam's Club'...

DO YOU REMEMBER-
... when the castle that now sticks out of Jockey's Ridge was part of a putt-putt course?
... the Casino, the Atlantis and the Foosball Palace?
... the Circus Tent where you went to listen to music and eat ice cream?
... the Junior Ranger Program held in the Sandcastle at Coquina Beach where you could spend the entire day working on arts/crafts, learning and earning badges?
... when the old Causeway to Manteo would flood?
... when a 'Deluxe' rental meant it had a window a/c and maybe a telephone?

Have a safe and Happy Fourth, leave the fireworks to the professionals and don't forget the Town of Duck Fourth of July parade- 9am, Friday, July 4th!
