So it's May.... this is the month where we try to finish getting everything done by Memorial Day.... when we start stocking up on hot titles and T-shirts... the month we realize- 'omigosh! the season is right around the corner!'... the month where dance recitals, ball games, home and school projects become priority and time spent with a book becomes scarce... May is the month for wrapping up all the ordinary, must-do's, have-to-be-there-by's so we can be ready for those extraordinary three months called Summer!
This issue dedicated to the memory of my grandmother,
Lelia Reed Anderson, 1910 - 2008, teacher, mother,
Willing Worker, farm wife and reader....
who shared a love of books and reading
with so many, including me. |

Reading Recommendations from the Cottage shelves |
Just out and sure to be a big hit this summer is The Outer Banks Cookbook by Elizabeth Wiegand. Wiegand is a North Carolina native who has been cooking and exploring the NC coast for thirty five years. This book is an authentic portrayal of both traditional and contemporary Outer Banks cuisine. There are shellfish recipes galore, chowders, preparation tips (like how to clean a soft-shell) and, gaining her 10 points for accuracy, there's even a bluefish recipe or two. Elizabeth will be here at Duck's Cottage for a book signing on Friday, July 25th. (Look for the book on our website soon!)
Just out today, Barbara Walters' much anticipated memoir, Audition... we have signed copies! First come, first serve!
Charlie has been a big fan of the James Patterson's young adult series Maximum Ride of which, to date, there are four books starting with The Angel Experiment, which I am now reading. The book's heroes are a 'flock' of 6 children who were raised in a laboratory after having been injected with avian DNA as babies. They have escaped 'the school' and are now on the run from the Erasers who are human/wolf mutants. It's entertaining, reads like a traditional James Patterson with short action packed chapters and the rest of the series is now on my summer reading list. (A movie version is supposedly coming.) Charlie and I are also pretty excited about this month's release of book 4 in Rick Riordan's Percy and the Olympians series, The Battle of the Labyrinth.
Judy Hauser read an advance copy of Elizabeth Noble's Things I Want My Daughters To Know and likes it so much she is going to recommend it to her reading group. She's really raving about it. Joanne Harris' much anticipated sequel to Chocolat comes out this month, The Girl With No Shadow. It begins five years after the events of Chocolat and finds Vianne and her daughters in Paris and still in the chocolate business. Reviews have been good. Chris Bohjalian has a new book out- Skeletons at the Feast as does Leif Enger (he wrote Peace Like a River)- So Brave, Young and Handsome. Two new hardbacks I want to get my hands on- The Ten Year Nap by Meg Wolitzer, author of The Position, and The Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir (you know me and English history), and a cookbook I'm dying to check out is The Splendid Table's How To Eat Supper.
New in paperback- Reading the Man: A Portrait of Robert E. Lee Through His Private Letters (Elizabeth Brown Pryor), The Assault on Reason (Al Gore), Five Skies (Ron Carlson), Garden Spells (Sarah Addison Allen), and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle- a big hit w/our reading group (Barbara Kingsolver).
Next time you're in Duck's Cottage be sure to check out our three new sections: Surfing- from the history of the sport, to the art of surfboards to memoirs by renowned surfers, this shelf will come in handy when the surf report is calm and glassy; Fashion & Style- Tim Gunn, Nina Garcia, Bazaar, In Style and more fill up a shelf dedicated to the art of dressing and dressing well; Diabetes/ Health- my skinny young husband was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes this fall (yeah, we're all still baffled by that) and since 2,200 people a day are diagnosed with either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes I decided to devote a shelf in the bookstore to a wide range of books on this subject.

The Sea Glass Guy is coming! |
Anyone who has ever picked up their first piece of sea glass soon finds out it won't be their last! Sea glass hunting can be considered a true obsession for many beachcombers (like me!) who are always searching for that next piece. I was thrilled when, soon after we opened, Richard Lamotte stopped by hawking his gorgeous book (and definitive work on the subject) Pure Sea Glass featuring the exquisite photography of Celia Pearson. Richard has been coming down for book signings ever since and we have been wanting to combine it with a presentation of his Power Point lecture on this fascinating subject.
I am very pleased to relay that we have just confirmed a June date for this event! Richard LaMotte, the infamous 'Sea Glass Guy', will be here on Friday June 20th to present his lecture Unlocking the Secrets of Seaglass. We will be holding the event in the Gathering Space at All Saint's Episcopal Church in Southern Shores. To get to All Saint's from Dogwood Trail, Turn onto Ginguite Trail (directly across from Kitty Hawk Elementary School and next to the Southern Shores Fire Department.) At the next stop sign, the church is on your left. Richard's presentation will begin at 7pm and will be followed by a book signing. We will have plenty of copies of Pure Sea Glass books, journals, guest books and boxed note cards available. Mark your calendars now to join us for this fun and enlightening evening. |

Footnotes from life at a coffee shop |
In case you haven't guessed by now, this month's newsletter is featuring aerial photographs of the new Soundfront Boardwalk at the Town of Duck Park. A ribbon-cutting was held on May 1st and this new addition to Duck is 'open for business'... that is, the business of sunset watching, star gazing, nature-loving-waterside-walking... another first for Duck was the Thursday morning Pilates class that started May 1st... the class meets at 7:30am on the Town Green and is free of charge.. Sarah finally pulled me into the new Rita's Italian Ices in the Southern Shores Marketplace... I can see a serious habit forming ... good luck to Rich & Wanda Harrison on this endeavour... another recent ribbon cutting was held at the Lost Colony's new Irene Smart Rains Costume Shop... this structure replaces the old costume shop which was destroyed by fire last September...restoration of the Wright Monument continues... cleaning, painting and other updates are expected to be finished by mid-month... don't forget about the Town of Duck Fourth of July Parade, 9am, on the 4th... WELCOME BACK PIPER & MARY!! and congrats on another year of studies done... what's your Mom getting for Mother's Day? How about a Duck's Cottage gift certificate? We maintain gift certificates in our computer wihch means she won't: A- have to remember where she put it and B- have it with her... she just gives us her name -et voila!- she'll be good to go! Who wouldn't love a credit waiting for them at Duck's Cottage? Every time she uses it will be like Mother's Day all over! Do it now by calling us at....

I hate to beat a dead horse so I'm not going to say much here about the impending opening of the first Outer Banks Starbucks (just remember, they are NOT locally owned and operated). Curiously enough, this editorial popped up recently in the Philadelphia Inquirer which puts a much more eloquent, nee reputable, spin on my heretofore unexpressed views.

Coming next month- my personal summer reading list, our 2008 T-shirts- unveiled for the first time (and mugs and hats!), a look at the new Duck's Cottage sign (we've had a banner for 6 years), the Summer Signings line-up, a word from Madame du Canard, Father's Day ideas and much, much more!
Don't forget that May is the month for mothers- be sure to tell the special Mom(s) in your life how much you love them! Love you, Mom!
(And also Grandma Q, Aunts Marlene & Mary, Jody, Carole, Marge, Tobi, Laura, Janet (all 3!), Katherine, Megan, Denice, Claiborne, Jackie, Lynette, Sarah, Nancy, my water aerobics ladies, Joyce, Elizabeth, all those dedicated FFMS SeaHawks baseball moms, Ellen, Lucy, Garnette, Patti, Kim... and every other awesome, unpaid household engineer-personal chef-car service driver-laundress-dog walker-tutor-domestic goddess that I know.
